4.0 out of 5 stars A generous take on a slightly dark industry
`The Look of Love' tells the story of the first `porn baron' of London, Paul Raymond - arguable the richest man in England to ever make his money in such an industry.

The first thing you need to know is that the casting of Steve Coogan is a sheer masterpiece. He's every bit believable as the sleazy, low-life kid from Liverpool who made his fortune in London...

2.0 out of 5 stars MIssed opportunity
THE LOOK OF LOVE once again reunites director Michael Winterbottom with Steve Coogan after 3 previously excellent outings(24 Hr Party People,A Cock And Bull Story and The Trip). This time, with a true story tale of Soho legend Paul Raymond, theyre slightly less succesful.Coogan is decent if a bit Partridgey in places, and the film does great work in capturing the look and...

4.0 out of 5 stars It's actually quite dark, 2 Oct. 2013

If you are looking for pure belly laughs, or 80's smut, look elsewhere.
This is actually quite a dark film, you see Raymond never quite getting what he wants out of life and the key relationships in his life falling down.
It's well acted and nicely directed.
There are laughs in it, but it's not played for laughs.
A good Friday night with a pizza and a bottle of wine movie.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, 8 Jun. 2014
This review is from: The Look of Love (DVD)
As with almost all biopics, half the battle with LoL is having an interest (passing or otherwise) in the life and times of the subject, in this case Soho porn purveyor Paul Raymond. To be fair however, there are enough interesting performances to haul the less committed viewer through to the end. The turns by Imogen Poots as Raymond's daughter Debbie and Chris Addison as Men Only boss Tony Power stand out, and it is never difficult to watch Anna Friel, here playing Raymond's wife Jean. Coogan himself is at the centre of everything, however the story almost seems to take place around him, with many events happening to Raymond rather than being driven by him. There are plenty of British thesps to spot, with David Walliams being prominent among them, and the production design deserves high billing for the glorious memories of time and place that it evokes. An amusing diversion, but there are difficult moments, and it's not all fluff and smut, the 18 certificate is deserved for various reasons. In the end, the film is unlikely to live long in the memory.

This film can't quite make up its mind whether it's a sex comedy or something more dramatic. The first half of the film is riddled with cameos from modern comics and with Coogan in bright and breezy mood dispensing one liners there are a fair few laughs to be had. Coogan is never going to win an oscar but is good enough to make you forget Alan Partridge, his characterisation being much closer (slightly worryingly) to Jimmy Savile.
As drugs begin to take over everyone's lives, however, things get a bit more depressing and consequently less entertaining. By the end of the film viewers are on something of a downer and it's not really very entertaining - even the nudity, which had been a bit cheeky and enjoyable early on, only gets seedier, in line with the dowmmarket direction of the content of Raymond's 'revues' and magazines.
One other rather sad development. I have been happily gazing at Anna Friel for the last 20 years since her days in Brookside. There are a couple of very attractive sexy young ladies in this film, but neither of them is Anna, who is reduced to the supporting role of the cuckolded/thrown over for a younger model wife. Even when she makes her reappearance in Raymond's life (and magazines) in later life, it is very much in the vein of 'not bad for a 40 year old.' If this film is the tipping point where Anna crossed over from playing sexy young girls to character roles, I'd just like to say thanks for the last 2 decades.
And the film? First part's fine but overall a bit depressing and not the most entertaining way to spend 90 minutes on the couch on a saturday night.

1.0 out of 5 stars Coogan's dream life story, 2 Sept. 2013

Honestly, it pains me to write this because everything Winterbottom and Coogan have done to date has been monumental. This, sadly, is a load of cock and bull.

It's horribly boring. Basically, a not very nice man makes a load of money by being the UK's H.Hefner. But just like the big H, Paul Raymond must have had a dark side.. nobody gets from zero to multimillionaire without hurting a few people and bending a few rules. But Coogan plays Raymond with more than a touch of Partridge aiming for the charming, slightly egocentric fella with an eye for the ladies. Most of the film is just Paul Raymond bragging and shagging. A bit of the film is the sad, sad story of how his self absorbed daughter ruined her own life.. but really, neither character is anyway sympathetic.

It's total codswallop. A Coogan wish fulfillment production.
