4.0 out of 5 stars Good ww2 strategy fun
I only showed an interest in this game because i am a ww2 fan (well not fan but you know what i mean) and quite enjoy turn based games, and i thoroughly enjoyed this title from start to finish. I enjoyed the way your squad members get medals and become more important to you each mission meaning you actually try to keep the alive rather than just charging them straight...

Legends of War is a turn-based strategic war game in which you control the forces of the U.S Third Army after their successful landings during the Normandy invasion, and with the task of breaking your way through France to liberate Paris and then into Germany and on to Berlin for ultimate victory.

The game is simple to play. You control a number of U.S Army forces depending on the mission type, ranging from the basic rifleman, to paratroopers, Rangers, snipers, bazooka teams, medics, engineers tanks and artillary.

Each unit has a primary and secondary weapon (for example, M1 Garand/M2 Pineapple grenade for the rifleman), and some units may have special abilities (such as the ability to see enemy units from further away for the Ranger, or the paratroopers high explosive grenade). Your units have attributes, which determine health, movement and damage, and each of their weapons have a limited amount of ammunition.

Missions fall into several catagories, which include 'attack' (wipe out all enemies), 'defence' (defending an area for a number of turns against waves of enemies), 'infiltration' (requiring an objective to be completed without alerting the enemy), and 'sabotage' (requiring you to negotiate the map to a location where an explosive can be planted).

Negotiating the tactical map is straight forward. The distance each unit can move is indicated by a series of green arrows displayed on the ground; press the 'A' button and your soldier will move to that location with the ability to crouch toggled by pressing 'X'. It is possible to take advantage of cover in order to obscure or make your soldier harder to hit.

Attacking is equally as simple; press 'Y' and this will toggle from movement to shooting, with line of sight indicated by a line travelling from your soldier to the target. Each weapon allows a certain number of shots per turn, and each weapon has different effects and causes different amounts of damage. If you still have unused shots left at the end of your turn, then you enter 'overwatch' - indicated by a green 'cone' - and will fire at any enemy that enters into your range on the enemy turn.

Quite realistically not all units are capible of damaging each other - those armed with small arms for example cannot damage tanks and tank destroyers whilst exceptional against tanks are ineffective against infantry. This makes using the right blend of units essential for success.

Successfully completing a mission rewards you with prestige, which between missions can be spent on healing your units, upgrading them to more effective unit types, or purchasing new units for you army. You also earn points which allow you to boost some general abilities of your units, such as damage, defence, the amount of prestige they accrue, or the amount of ammo they can carry.

Grapically the game is quite basic, but pleasant. Characters move smoothly around the map as directed and the terrain is simple but effective. Likewise the sound is quite simple too, consisting of repeating militaristic background music, simple sound effects and generic shouts and cries from troops when you select them or when they are wounded and killed. Theres nothing wrong with it, it just doesnt shake any trees when it comes to presentation.

In terms of complaints there arent many. It is often difficult to determine whether your soldier have a line of fire to his target, and the lack of a realistic destructable cover system means that a unit can escape damage from cannon fire by hiding behind something as flimsy as a slatted fence. I have read other complaints including a mention that the soundtrack judders during the game, however I am yet to experience this, and whilst the control system has also been criticised I personally found this easy to master after just one mission.

Other than that, the only complaint would be that this game doesnt break any new ground. It is what it is - a simple, fun, straight forward, turn-based strategy game of the sort that is still too infrequent on the Xbox. Its probably not a game for casual users, it probably helps if you have a particular passion for the history, units and equipment of WW2, and it perhaps isnt worth the price that I paid for it on day of release (it has dropped in price already), but I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed the way your squad members get medals and become more important to you each mission meaning you actually try to keep the alive rather than just charging them straight into instant death just to replace them. The only slight flaw with the game was sometimes when you prepare for a mission you spend your prestige on the wrong kind of unit, or not enough, meaning you cant win the mission. I have gone into missions without any tank busters only to find a couple of tanks waiting at the end of the map etc but apart from this small niggle i really enjoyed the game.

For a full review of the ins and outs of the gameplay I would recommend you read the "Chiefs" review above. I want to tell you why Legends of War fails to be on an equal level with the excellent X-Com but which, if it had been made properly, would easily have been on a par with that game. The reasons are:

1. The graphics are dated and could easily run on the last gen X-Box...which seems slightly mean until you find out...

2. There is NO destructive scenery. Tanks can't destroy buildings. Tanks bounce off fences. X-Com let you blow chunks out of walls etc. Not so here. A huge mistake considering the subject matter.

3. Snipers can't go up high, unlike X-Com, or lay prone on the ground and fire through objects. So you have your snipers exposed every time you need to hit a target.

4. Big targets just dissappear when taken out. Tank goes BOOM. Tank vanishes off the play area. Same for machine gun nests or AA guns etc. Niow you see them...now you don't.

5. Yes you can go on overwatch if you don't use up all your shots in one go. Sadly though overwatch only extends to within the green range of your vision. Which means anyone just outside that vision...even when in plain view...can pop off shots at you with no reply. This works both ways of course but is faintly stupid.

6. You can't save mid game, or at any time, in any senario. Which means having to restart and play levels over if you muck up big time. Which you will because finally...

7. The AI and game design goes from walk in the park to mega hard with just a few senarios. You are just finding your feet when the classic game spike rears its ugly head. And that is not even mentioning the farcical stealth missions.

With some extra work made on the points above Legends of War would easily be on equal footing with X-Com as a great tactical game for the X-Box. As it is it falls short in that respect but does beat Omerta City of Gangsters...which wouldn't be that hard.

Easy controls on 360, not too challenging, possibly a little easy, can become repeatative but if your looking for a casual pick up n play ww2 rts then this isn't at all too bad a choice, I hope expansions are planned, maybe ore units or nationalities, as single player you play as allies only (usa, uk, free french) id like to have played the axis too. Maybe this will be dlc in the future.

Unless you are desperatly into WWII this is a waste of time. Weak graphics, repetitive sound effects, annoying voices and a clunky user interface. If you are looking for a turn based strategy game , there isn't much choice but XCOM is far superior.

good game once you get used to what you have to do, can be frustrating going into battle and half way in finding out you picked the wrong team and have to start over again but that is part of the game.
