4.0 out of 5 stars So nearly a great book
About half of this book is an absolutely fascinating read which you will find impossible to put down. The vivid and sometimes harrowing account of Durant's capture and subsequent treatment is extremely well written.
My only problem with the book is that it could have been about half the length. While the first half of the book does deal with Durant's Somali...

3.0 out of 5 stars Edited 'British version' required!!!
This is a compelling story about a mission that went terribly wrong, and of the subsequent suffering of one man who came to survive it.
Unfortunately, being written by an American, it contains the usual overdose of 3 elements that tend to stick in the throat a bit (at least of this British reader)
1. Overt Christianity and "my love of God" references (remember...

4.0 out of 5 stars So nearly a great book, 27 Jun 2003
About half of this book is an absolutely fascinating read which you will find impossible to put down. The vivid and sometimes harrowing account of Durant's capture and subsequent treatment is extremely well written.
My only problem with the book is that it could have been about half the length. While the first half of the book does deal with Durant's Somali nightmare, the second half spends more time looking at his career as a whole during his time in the Armed Forces. Interesting in itself, but not what I was expecting.
Having said this, I read the whole book in about a day flat, so maybe I'm being hyper-critical?

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartrending and stirring memoir, 22 July 2003
By

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
While not matching Mark Bowden's classic account of the Battle of Mogadishu, this memoir by Michael Durant (the shot down and captured Black Hawk pilot) is nonetheless heartrending and stirring. He provides a detailed account of his experience, including many details previosuly unrevealed, and he refuses to flinch from the tragedy and brutality of his downing, capture and release. His story is at times stretched to fill a whole book, but he makes up for this by providing details of his experience as a special ops pilot prior to the events of '93.
Perefectly judged, and written with style and passion, this is a perfect companion to 'Black Hawk Down', succeeding in providing a stark no-holds barred account of modern warfare, and ultimately proving to be an inspiring and frank account of man in extemis, and celebrating the heroism and cameraderie of the brotherhood of arms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching, 17 Sep 2004
By A Customer
The Somalia incident brought many things to light but following an individual soldiers account reveals the personal side of such a harrowing incident. Durants book is an incredibly emotive retelling of his personal story. It has left alot of mental resonance with me. Highly recommended for anyone interested in military history, the somalia conflict or human nature in general.

This is an amazing book. Michael J. Durant shows such bravery in this book. He has a tremendously rough time but stays focused through the hell in which he is in. This a true story and makes you think about what you've got. Its makes you appreciate living in England. Buy it but prepare to be shocked!

4.0 out of 5 stars blackhawk down, 21 Nov 2008
Mike Durant shares with us his missions from Panama, Iraq, Korea and Somalia. The last meet the fate of what occur through the enture book. He wrote about the day he was captured till the day he is freed - the brutality, suffering, and sometime goodwill and kindness while staying in captive.

Mike wrote some of other occurence with friends and importantly his Heroes - the crew and company of Night Stalker. The many challenges he faced while climbing to the ranks of top helicoptor pilot - he is.

I like this book, although I know most part of what will happen before reading it. I rate this 4 Star review.

This is an excellent book by one of the many heroes of the action in Somalia. The book fills in Durant's experiences while held by a Somali warlord as well as his own perspective on the days events not least the heroic attempt of two Delta Force members Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart to prevent the crew of "Super Six Four" being overrun. The book also contains the authors career in the US Army up to that date including his actions in Panama and Iraq with information not revealed before.
Thoroughly recommended especially for those who've read Blackhawk Down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, 1 Sep 2004

Peter H (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This is a great read, especially if you read the Black Hawk Down book or seen the movie.
The book is almost like an extension of the movie continuing with the Mike Durant story.
It gives a good insight into what happens after his helicopter was shot down and the dreadful but true fate of one of his crew that wasn't told accurately in the movie/book. (Through no fault of their own, Mike simply chose not to disclose it until this book)
Well written, fascinating and a touching story.

This is truly a great book. It was a pleasure to read, it shows the bravery of two delta force snipers who attempted a to hold of hundreds of angry somalians until reinforcments came. Mike Durrant is a very brave man, i encourage you to read this book because it shows how service personal become a brotherhood and how they will give their lives for their buddies

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerfull!!!!!!!!!!!!, 13 Jun 2006
This book was a great find, not only does Mike Durant tell about his captivity but he also tells about his military career and a wee bit of history about the nightstalkers. However I did find his constant remarks about his patriotism a wee bit ott. But once one got over that aspect of this book it does make a very fine read.
