This review is from: Hellsing Ultimate Volume 5-8 Collection [DVD] (DVD)
This volume includes four instalments of the very gory 'Hellsing Ultimate' OVA series (numbers five to eight) on two discs with a third disc of special features. The series continues to be extremely entertaining with some truly great action scenes as well as a few small emotional moments. The episodes in this volume also have some nice humour, even if the transition between the humour and the darker action can be a little jarring.

Hellsing Ultimate V is the first episode in this set and sees Millennium begin their bloody assault on London. Although this episode doesn't include Seras and Alucard only has a brief appearance at the beginning and end, it still has some very nice moments. As well as Millennium's attack, we also get to see a nice car chase through the vampire haunted streets of London and the human officers of the British Military also show some nice backbone. The episode also sees Integra encounter Father Anderson and his troops who show just what the Iscariot Organisation is capable of.

Episodes VI and VII focus mostly on Millennium's assault on the Hellsing mansion itself forcing Seras Victoria and the mercenary Wild Geese to fight for their lives against First Lieutenant Zorin Blitz and her battalion. Meanwhile the Vatican forces also begin to make their move. This is where 'Hellsing Ultimate' begins to get extremely good. The fight for the mansion is brilliant, showing just why the Wild Geese are worth their money and what kind of man Captain Pip Bernadotte really is. These two episodes also give Seras Victoria the chance to shine as she fights alongside the wild Geese and finally comes to terms with her true nature as well as her vampiric powers. The battle for the mansion is one of the reasons why I rank 'Hellsing Ultimate' as one of my favourite anime and Seras' fight against Zorin is also very nicely done. Episode seven also includes a little backstory for both Bernadotte and Seras that is quite interesting.

Episode VIII is the last episode in this volume and it sees Alucard return to London in style as Millennium's forces continue their destruction and the Vatican's 9th Crusade joins the battle. With the presence of so many enemies in close proximity Alucard is allowed to show the true extent of his powers. This eighth episode is another brilliant one and is a great climax to this volume with some of the most stunning visuals in the entire series to date as the battle reaches its height.

The animation for the series remains very good throughout with the only minor problem being that the CGI for some of the human crowds is a little clunky in places. The, quite course, English dub of the episodes also remains generally good (accents aside), with the original Japanese included as well of course.

This volume also includes a number of special features (most of which I haven't got around to watching yet unfortunately) including textless songs, cast commentaries, answers to fan questions and some trailers. There is also the Hellsing Participating in a Legend featurette, the Hellsing Cast Round Table Discussion and the first episode of 'The Dawn', a Hellsing prequel.

Overall this was a very entertaining volume of 'Hellsing Ultimate' that is easily worth at least five stars and I am very much looking forward to seeing the rest of the series once it is released.

To a mind numbed by 'PC' tv, Hellsing Ultimate 1 - 4 was just a brilliant bit of contrived insanity, you would think it couldn't get any madder. 5-8 just proves how wrong you can be, I watched these with my teenage son in one sitting it just ended all to soon. We both eagerly await the next instalments.

This review is from: Hellsing Ultimate Volume 5-8 Collection [DVD] (DVD)
Contains 3 discs covering episodes 5-8, each episode being around 45 minutes. Includes English Dub, which is astounding. Nice artwork on the inner cover which can be reversed with the front cover - has the same spine artwork. A must buy for anyone who bought the first 4 Hellsing Ultimate episodes, if you thought the first 4 episodes were good, you'll be blown away by next 4! Would recommend to any mature horror/vampire fan, even if you don't watch anime. VERY HAPPY WITH MY PURCHASE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great anime, 21 Jun 2014

Well, all that one can say is, if you like top quality anime, there is little to compare with this series, the characters are well thought out as is the story. Of course it's weird as anything but it is Japanese after all and I think lovers of anime expect nothing else. Apart from a few cultural misunderstandings which one learns to overlook after a while, it's spot on.

This review is from: Hellsing Ultimate Volume 5-8 Collection [DVD] (DVD)
Hellsing is named after and centered around the Royal Order of Protestant Knights, originally led by Abraham Van Helsing. The mission of Hellsing is to search and destroy those that threaten Queen and Country from the undead and other supernatural forces of evil. This organization is currently led by Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, who inherited the leadership of Hellsing as a child after the death of her father. She witnessed his death which turned her from a once innocent and shy little girl to a tough and deadly force. She is protected by the faithful Hellsing family butler and former Hellsing "trashman" Walter C. Dornez, a deadly foe in his own right, and Alucard, the original and most powerful vampire that swore loyalty to the Hellsing family after being defeated by Van Helsing one hundred years before the story takes place. These formidable guardians are joined early on in the storyline by former police officer Seras Victoria, whom Alucard turned into a vampire. She is mostly involved for satire and comedy and beauty as a new vampire trying to learn a new lifestyle.
