After being online for many years and having compilation books sporadically released, finally, The Onion News Network releases a fantastic dvd compilation of the finest satirical news programme since The Day Today.

Featuring many of The Onion's best presenters, in particular the beltway punditry of the First Responders, the bland, perma-smiling banality of Today Now! and the incoherent ranting of the semi-literate former gold prospector Joad Cressbeckler, The Onion News Network delivers humour sharp and fast in a way that we haven't seen for years.

If all you know of American network comedies are the trying-too-hard-to-be-quirky, squeaky smart-mouthing that makes up the bulk of some digital television channel's output, The Onion News Network will remind you that American comedy can be smart and funny in a way not seen since the golden age of The Simpsons.

Truly excellent series, breathtakingly funny right the way through. The second season isn't quite as strong as the first from a comedic standpoint, but it more than makes up for it with remarkably strong characters for what is essentially a sketch series and a fantastic narrative throughline. Joke after joke after joke, brilliantly entertaining.

And if you've only seen episodes online or retrieved them from their original American airing, the DVDs (while devoid of any special features) contain delightful (and often mortifying) additional scenes within the main episodes. A thoroughly worthy purchase.
