What an amazing service Peter Penfold has provided to the UK and, more pertinently, to the people of Sierra Leone. Peter was instrumental in rescuing a democratically elected government from anarchy and re-instating it successfully, to the delight of its people.
No wonder they have made him a Paramount Chief! But, what did Her Majesty's Government do? Somehow we did not find a further posting in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office; the informal off-the-record reason - because he had 'Gone Native'.
This book reveals all, for those who want to know the inside truth of what happened in civil war. Well written narrative, couldn't put it down!

Mention Sierra Leone to anyone in UK and the reaction is - isn't there a war going on there? is it safe? Well, there was a war going on there - 12 years ago - and in this book the then British High Commissioner Peter Penfold describes what happened and his role in the events as they unfurled. Sierra Leone is now officially out of 'post conflict' status and recovering from the devastating period of its history. It is now safe and is one of few former colonies where the Union Flag is displayed often and there is genuine affection towards the UK. An interesting read with insights 'behind the scenes'. If you want to know what diplomats do, this is one account.
