4.0 out of 5 stars True Crime Thriler. (not a horror!), 22 July 2013

This review is from: Town That Dreaded Sundown [Blu-ray] [US Import] (Blu-ray)
Texarkana is a small town on the border of Texas and Arkansas. Sometime after world war 2 it was terrorised by a mysterious assailant that haunted the local lovers lane. His first attack left a young couple badly beaten, after that he progressed to murder. Local cops, with the assistance of a Texas ranger attempt to uncover the killers identity.

Town that dreaded sundown is a documentary style thriller from director Charles B. Pierce, probably most famous for the classic Legend of Boggy creek Legend of Boggy Creek [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] possibly one of the most famous bigfoot mockumentarys ever and also shot around the same locale of Texarkana. Starring legendary western actor BEN JOHNSON as the Texas ranger, and the ever-awesome Andrew Prine as the sheriffs deputy, the film is a neat thriller that slasher fans might find somewhat sedate and disappointing. Make no mistake, this is a great little movie and well directed, but it's sedate pace and documentary style might end up alienating more modern horror audiences. Its best to approach this as a film like Helter Skelter or Zodiac, a slice of true crime Americana. Viewed like this its an interesting film that also benefits from an informative commentary with a local Texarkana historian who gives us some interesting facts about the case.

Scream factory's presentation of the film is as ever first rate, and the usual caveate regarding region locking applies here. That aside its a great presentation of a genuinely interesting film.

As a bonus on the DVD version included in this double play is THE EVICTORS an entire second film from director Pierce starring Michael Parks, Vic Morrow and Jessica Harper. Like TTDS its set around the tail end of world war 2 and sees Parks and Harpers characters move into a new house with a bloody history. It's a haunted house movie where the ghost is a living person, determined no one will live in their house! This one is an excellent little film and unlike Town it fits absolutely into the horror category. As a bonus feature an entire film is always appreciated, especially when its at a level of quality that it could warrant its own release!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all., 4 Feb. 2015
This review is from: Town That Dreaded Sundown [Blu-ray] [US Import] (Blu-ray)
This was pretty good. i really didn't expect much from this movie as i hadn't heard anything about it but i was pleasantly surprised at how well done it was. had a pretty good story and has some nice gore elements to it. i agree with other comments in that its not a horror more of a serial killer thriller tormenting his victim. this movie reminded me of the Zodiac movie! If you are a fan of crime/thriller murder movies then i would recommend this.
