4.0 out of 5 stars Politics And It's Power
Written by Paula Milne, 'The Politician's Husband' is a drama of ambition, intrigue, betrayal, divided loyalties and jealously all delivered convincingly by a superb cast. Aiden Hoynes (David Tennant) is an arrogant and ambitious frontbench minister who resigns his post as a ploy to seek party leadership (no party is actually named). His wife, Freya Gardner (Emily Watson)...

3.0 out of 5 stars One for Tennant fans
The story is largely predictable and the twist at the end you can see coming from a mile away, but it's mildly entertaining and one for David Tennant fans to add to their collection

This review is from: The Politician's Husband [DVD] (DVD)
Written by Paula Milne, 'The Politician's Husband' is a drama of ambition, intrigue, betrayal, divided loyalties and jealously all delivered convincingly by a superb cast. Aiden Hoynes (David Tennant) is an arrogant and ambitious frontbench minister who resigns his post as a ploy to seek party leadership (no party is actually named). His wife, Freya Gardner (Emily Watson) has played second fiddle to her husband's career and is a junior minister. The plan backfires and is sabotaged by Aiden's old ally and friend, Bruce Babbish (Ed Stoppard). Whilst Freya is climbing the political ladder, Aiden becomes isolated and frustrated. Their marriage and professional relationship (they have a 10 year old son, Noah, with autism) begin to develop cracks. The events that follow are compelling.

This is a compulsive viewing of how power and dominance can corrupt and warp values. David Tennant and Emily Watson give outstanding performances. I doubt this will improve viewers' opinions concerning the machinery of politics and its membership. An excellent thought-provoking and enjoyable production.

4.0 out of 5 stars Turnabout Is Fair Play, 16 July 2014

Turnabout is fair play in most situations, but who knows what is fair in this series? I remember 'The Politician's Wife' very well, the wife played by Julie Stevenson, certainly got hers. Now, the husband comes into play and what a romp!

Aiden Hoynes, played by David Tennant, resigns from the government, in protest of the PM's immigration policy, but in reality he wanted the leadership himself. It backfires, because his best friend, secretary of state for work and pensions, Bruce Babbish, played by Ed Stoppar, stabs him in the back. All is lost until Aiden's wife, Freya, played by Emma Watson, and another PM is offered a prime job. Freya Has always stayed in the background, supporting her husband, but now it is her time to shine!

This is an excellently written and acted series. It is just in time as a woman's place is being discussed throughout the world. It is especially wonderful to see the UK jump in and bring this series to the fore. I won't give much away, but the 3 episodes are so well done, raise a lot of hackles, and the ending is superlative.

Recommended. prisrob 07-15-14

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly realistic; great script and great actors, 3 May 2013
This review is from: The Politician's Husband [DVD] (DVD)
I am watching it at the moment on BBC, and I have been amazed by the way in which the series portraits politics 'games of power', and how they 'replicate' in the family life and dynamic of the characters. David Tennant's acting is perfectly suited to the character. It is a film/ series to buy and keep.

5.0 out of 5 stars David Tennant a baddie?, 30 Jun 2013

Taut and suspenseful, David Tennant shines as a betrayed senior cabinet member who watches his wife rise towards the position he craves: Prime Minister. His attempt to avenge his loss and humiliation goes terribly wrong, endangering any further political aspirations as well as his marriage.

Excellent cast and a riveting storyline. I enjoyed everything about this series. The storyline is modern and credible and the characters play off against each other perfectly. It involves a husband and wife who are both politicians, the dream couple, interwoven with characters with their own agendas. One of the best of this genre.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but not terriffic, 19 Jun 2014

This was OK but not as good as i had hopes. I would not have ordered it if I had known it was only 3 episodes. Nothing special in the plot or the acting. I am a fan of both David Tennant and Emily Watson but I have seen them both in better show. It was just OK.

I don't know how on earth I missed this when it was on TV, but it is a very well written drama series about a couple whose lives are bound by their jobs in politics. David Tennant is wonderful as usual and it is gripping from beginning to end. Loved it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 9 Jun 2013
This review is from: The Politician's Husband [DVD] (DVD)
I thoroughly enjoyed "the Politician's Wife", and looked forward to this. Disappointing. The David Tennant character was unlikeable and unsympathetic. The story moved/jerked too quickly to achieve it's end, which was not a twist, but expected. Perhaps there was only money for 3 episodes. Would you vote for the DT character or Bruce Babbage, who both show appalling lack of judgment and are easily hoodwinked by the newest scheme? Total dicks! The only surprise is why Emily Watson did not loose her temper earlier on, telling them both to get lost so that she could get on with running the Country, the home, her children etc-she might then have had time to remove her make-up at night! Nice Farrow and Ball paint on walls though.
