4.0 out of 5 stars How are you sheriff? Old.
Sheriff Owens is a man who has resigned himself to a life of fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction after leaving his LAPD post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with failure and defeat after his partner was crippled. After a spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy, the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice to see Arnie make a comeback
A bit slow, certainly no Terminator 2, but nice to see an aging Arnie back in the saddle! Worth watching but not brilliant

4.0 out of 5 stars Well I loved it!!!, 20 Oct 2013

This review is from: The Last Stand [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
It was a great laugh. Ok it isn't going to win any Oscars and no Arnie can't really act, but I loved it, a great action film, not afraid to show wicked gun fights and flying limbs. A film you don't have to dissect and watch 27 times before you understand what the hell is going on. A good old fashioned action film. No more no less.

4.0 out of 5 stars The view from [....], 20 Sep 2013

Arnies back!!

The leader of a Mexican drug cartel Gabriel (Eduardo Noriega) makes a daring escape from an FBI prisoner convey, he steals a high powered sports car and heads south to the border, the Police and Feds can't stop him (though shooting his tyres out or using a 'stinger' would have definitely slowed him down!), all that stands before him and freedom is the local Police of a small US town, Johnny Knoxville.....and Arnie!!

Yep, everybodys favourite 80's action man is back doing what he does best, a grizzled face, you know Arnie will kick ass. Absolute nonsense, car's wrecked every other scene, bullets fly, blood gets spilled, lots of blood that is, the whole plot is laughable but it's all great fun. Arnie could never act for toffee, he's a walking wardrobe, but who cares, Johnny Knoxville wears a hat and goggles, Forest Whitaker is black and angry, any female character is eye candy, it's all played tongue in cheek, though mostly bullet in cheek, and is a perfect Saturday might accompaniment to your beer and pizza!

This review is from: Last Stand [Blu-ray] [2013] (Blu-ray)
It's always fun watching Arnie in action, it's been a while since he's done a full film and while this is far from his best, it's still a decent watch. The story is simple, Arnie is a sheriff in a small town on the Mexican border. Forest Whitaker is in charge of an FBI team transporting the head of the cartel, who subsequently escapes and his path to Mexico runs through the small, once peaceful town.

It doesn't take long to get going and it doesn't take itself too seriously. The action is over the top with some amusing moments dotted throughout. Jonny Knoxville as the deranged gun nut provides most of these moments and he's actually not too annoying.

All in all it's an entertaining watch with a few jokes, mostly poking at Arnie's previous films. Not bad at all.

I Really enjoyed the film. It was slow in the start but once the film got going it was great with a lot of action. I'm not normally an Arnie fan but this is well worth watching and better than his other films. Its one i will gladly watch again

No nonsense fun. A good film to sit back, relax and not worry too much about the slightly implausible script. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, uneven, enjoyable lighthearted action, 6 Aug 2013
This review is from: Last Stand [Blu-ray] [2013] (Blu-ray)
The Last Stand feels more like a script than most films of this genre: everything about it feels tailored to 'movie-land' fiction: the larger than life absurdity of its jailbreak; the little border town full of oddball folk which is conveniently half-emptied as most of the town go off to support a sports game; the semi-useless sheriff's department headed by an old-timer who's hoping for a quiet life after having seen too much...and yet somehow despite all of the mass of clichés (in fact - almost perversely BECAUSE of them) it's impossible to take it seriously enough for them to matter. It ends up being light-hearted daft fun that you can take quite comfortably on it's own ridiculous terms.
Schwarzenegger's return to the action-hero arena isn't nearly as ridiculous as it ought to be, despite the obvious advance of time shown by his increasingly skeletal appearance and more awkward movement. His character still has charisma to spare, and more than holds his own during a heck of a showdown.
The plot about the escaped drug lord played by Eduardo Noriega running for the border in a supercar is nonsense that could be jotted on the back of a napkin, as is the ridiculous way he evades almost every attempt to stop him in spite of reality and logic. However, when it does kick off, the action is flashy and consistently entertaining, Knoxville is okay as support, and the stunts are good fun. It's essentially a modern day western, and it's designed to make about as much sense as one. This is a movie to just sit back and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome return for one of the elite action movie stars, 3 Aug 2013
This review is from: The Last Stand [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
After nearly 10 years away from the industry Arnie appeared in Expendables & the sequel, this film is his first return to the main lead in over 10 years & it is good to have him back.
The Last Stand is 80's old skool with a simple plot of "The bad guys will not get away with this & shall be stopped",which still works & often used but not really done as well as Arnie or a handful of other action movie stars can deliver.
Honestly it is action packed & has many a good clean laugh delivered by action & speech mainly with the antics of Johnny Knocksville's character.
Buy it you won't regret it.
The DVD has a nice making of segment as well as deleted scenes & extended scenes that were cut shorter for the movie so this is a nice little addition.
