The story of Rilo Kiley is not an unfamiliar one. Indie band gain cult following, slowly growing and their music gets put on shows like The OC etc and they get signed to a major label, release one album aimed at the mainstream, which fails and then they cease to be. This is their archive (get it?) material..17 tracks (one hidden) most unreleased. Most of it is very good indeed. They span their entire career and hangs together very well indeed.

Rilo Kiley are a slightly quirky indie band with Jenny Lewis' voice being an absolute marvel at every turn. Songs like It'll Get You There, A Town Called Luckey, Patiently and The Frug are as good as anything they have released. They are rocky indie pop songs with the occasional nod to a country twang. Lewis' often portrays characters in post breakup mould and there are a lot of songs here that you could feel yourself loving if you were trying to come to terms with that situation.

As a compilation is a great one. Equal to any of the albums (certainly better than Under The BlackLight). Does it have its weak tracks? Yes - the remix of Dejalo is not very good and American Wife a bit too twee. But overall this doesn't detract from a great set of songs and a band that was loved deeply by its fan base and is missed.

What a joy! This is well worth the wait. Just praying Rilo Kiley follow up the release of this with a tour.
Don't miss the hidden track following a l-o-n-g silence after The Frug

This is great. It is like having a new RK album. Wonderful songs, punchy production. Makes you realise what a top band they were.

It's always a good idea to check out what's available. This marvellous collection of out-takes, throwaways stands comparison with anything Rilo Kiley achieved together - and that Jenny Lewis has yet achieved solo or with Johnny (aka The Luckiest Man Since Chris Stein). Great tunes, fabulous voice, occasionally accessible lyrics. Great stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just leftovers!, 29 July 2013

A lot of bands seem to put together collections of unreleased demos, "B sides" & so called rarities either as a filler between albums or 'farewell'. Sadly, it looks like this falls into the latter category. However, if you like the grittier, confessional side of Rilo Kiley you will find this more satisfying than their final studio efforts. The recordings are spread over the band's career and that makes for a satisfying degree of variation in tempo and styles.

Yes, some of it seems, if anything, under-produced but the quality of the songs is pretty good and the performances come from the heart.
