The pair had been thrown together in adverse times...
on 15 December 2015
I found the first half of this book delightful, with the brooding Robert and the down-to-earth Jane travelling to Portugal to find her brother, Harry. He had been wounded in the Peninsular War and required to be taken back to England. The oddly assorted pair had been thrown together in adverse times, and their budding romance is delicately portrayed. The second half, when they were back in England, is a little darker. I was a somewhat disappointed that the redoubtable Jane became so afraid of Robert's jealousy. I felt that she had more spirit and that made me a little irritated with her choice of action. However, it is a well-written book - as you would expect from Ms Statham - and I would recommend it as a good read.
