I obtained this book through LibraryThing's Member Giveaway in May but for various reasons only got around to reading it this week. Apologies, as I had intended to read and review it as soon as possible.

The initial couple of pages, describing the alien fleet approaching Earth, reminded me of "Doc" Smith's Lensmen series, after that it settles down a bit to become an easily read and interesting "alien attack" genre book. I suspect it was written for older teens rather than adults, but either can read it and enjoy it.

My one concern is how jarring it was - initially at least - to have a section concentrating on one of the major characters set in the present, and then a section immediately after it providing some of this character's backstory. I say "initially" because after the first couple of chapters not only was I used to it but I was looking forward to learning of each of the character's history as I grew more "attached" to them.

There is a twist at the end about the alien invaders, leading obviously towards a sequel, but it was easily guessed very early on in the novel.

I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys less-serious science fiction genre stories.

This was quite a good story, it kept me happily entertained, but;
The writing style was awkward around the flashbacks, sometimes I'd read two pages before it became apparent that it was a flashback. The life history of the characters added nothing to the plot and seemed to be mere padding.
When all said and done, this was a freebie, enough said.

Really enjoyed the premise of the plot, losers and outcasts of society behaving uncharacteristically to defend the earth against alien invaders. Nice twist at the end.

Did not like the idea that their would be a sequel.... sometime, thus leaving the story hanging.

Would have scored higher if it had been completed.
