This review is from: The Mongol Rally - 8,000 miles in a 1982 Ford Fiesta! (Kindle Edition)
The book is a diary based account of the author's Mongol Rally experience - in essence a charity event (in principle) combined with an adventurous trek from London to Ulan Baator in a car usually older than 10 years and with an engine displacement of under 1000cc.

The author and two of his friends thought the journey an interesting enough summer occupation and promptly an 1980s Ford Fiesta was chosen as the steed for the job. Larger, 13 inch wheels and a roof box were more or less the extent of preparations, with maps also only reaching as far as the Slovak - Ukrainian border.

The book is composed of day long entries, with the starting mileage always recorded (to give an impression of the distance traveled the previous day) and then the events of the day covered. While not atypically for the event, drinking appeared frequently and in copious quantities, the majority of the descriptions follow other road users, people encountered, run ins with the police and at border crossings and the impressions of the landscapes traversed and cities, where they passed through. A definite bonus is the very tolerant and open minded attitude of the protagonists - which is often not the case when traveling across countries not geared towards tourism is experienced for the first time.

The writing is solid enough to enable a flowing read but reading it almost back to back with Survival of the Quickest: Across Africa. In a Porsche one would in all fairness need to say it is not quite of the same quality. In the same vein, one also has less of an urge to try and immediately sign up for the next iteration of the rally or start scouring the used car websites after reading this book than after Survival of the Quickest: Across Africa. In a Porsche; still the author in my opinion manages to better some professional journalists in this respect regardless - I#d much sooner set off into some vehicular adventure after reading this than for instance The Road to Muckle Flugga: Great Drives in Five Continents.

If you enjoy reading about road trips or are trying to test out the waters from other people's accounts before committing yourself, this is certainly not a bad start - especially since it is also the most condensed Mongol Rally account I have found so far. If it then strikes your fancy, something like Survival of the Quickest: Across Africa. In a Porsche is likely to prepare you for the experience much better - especially since such a road trip can test friendships in the extreme.

Great book! Not perfectly well written but who cares? The journey was well documented with many references to the locations visited, helped along by good humour, just what you would expect from a group of lads left to their own devices!
Will read again, and I don't often re-read
