5.0 out of 5 stars Way To Blue Concert Tribute Is Sublime
I hesitate to start this review by making it clear that I was originally astounded by Nick Drake's music when in my last year of school in 1969, having purchased his first album " Five Leaves Left" on the strength of hearing the track "Time Has Told Me" upon an Island Records sampler album of the time. I could never understand then why he didn't reach more appreciative...

3.0 out of 5 stars a wistful reminder of what used to be
Without going into great detail, I have to acknowledge the great love and affection for Nick Drake's music amongst those participating. Indeed, there are a number of excellent performances throughout. However, one is left with an unsatisfied feeling which comes down to the fact that like some other great singer-songwriters (eg Elton John), no-one ever quite manages to do...

It is no small thing to have an album that does justice to the songs of Nick Drake. This is it. Sublime musicianship, great arrangements and a fresh take on a well chosen set of masterful songs. Nothing like the real thing, of course, but warmly recommended.

Indeed, there are a number of excellent performances throughout. 2.0 out of 5 stars Way to Blue, 26 April 2014
This review is from: Way To Blue - The Songs Of Nick Drake (Audio CD)
I was astounded at some of these cover versions of songs by, possibly, one of our greatest talents. For goodness sake, do not buy this: simply disregard it and buy the originals. Nick Drake was gifted. The artists here (with the exception of Danny Thompson) aren't even though we're constantly told they are. Nick Drake wrote some lines on Things Behind the Sun which says it all: 'Once you've seen what they have been/To win the earth just won't seems worth your night or your day/Who'll hear what I say.' He was a man who KNEW the truth. Buy the originals: Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon are wonderful: the performances, the recording (John Wood), the arrangements (Robert Kirby), the production (Joe Boyd) and the songs themselves. Great music transcends its time and the ND albums have and will endure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good album well made., 18 Jun 2013

This review is from: Way To Blue - The Songs Of Nick Drake (Audio CD)
The songs of Nick Drake performed by talented current folk artists could have been a huge mistake but the concerts and now this album are seen as a welcome addition for the followers of the legendary singer songwriter. I enjoyed the cd and recommend it , although one or two of his great songs were not sung well enough for me hence the 4 star score.
