the Woodentops are a cracking band mixing (often) frenetic, pulsating percussion with beautiful melody. There is a great variety of tracks here too though from the dreamy So Good Today (which recalls a great day with someone you are in love with) to the driven and really rather fantastic Travelling Man (which to these ears encapsulates the Woodentops sound). Love Affair with Everyday Living mixes quirky violin with a reverberating guitar and the line, "you'll find few that really care, in the comfort of their office chair" - I always liked that!

there are many other highlights too and disc two starts with Maybe It Will Last - a fast tempo, fun song full of frivolity, keyboard cheekiness, guitar and breathless drumming. The Woodentops have a very distinctive sound built up from a tight rhythm section, tuneful guitar lines and singer Rolo McGinty's voice. Its no surprise the band evolved into one of the pioneers of the Balearic scene and the final tracks on the discs reveal this evolution. They released a live album called "Hypno Beat Live" which, when you listen to it, marvellously captures the incredible energy the band had and have live.

I really recommend this album - not least for the number of the tracks on it but more importantly the quality of them. Indeed I would buy it for disc one alone which comprises much of their first album Giant but then you get disc two (their second album Wooden Foot Cops on the Highway - which is also great too + extras) and disc three (more extras and some fine singles). The Woodentops were/are a creative band but this is not at the expense of great tunes and quite simply if this is what you are looking for then this album is a great investment.

Where to start? Well, well, well - what about the fab upgraded sonic sound? Crisp, clear and a seemingly out of time production, rendering a body of excellent songs with groovy tunes that could have been recorded yesterday. Pretty much every track is foot-tapping, shower hummingly good. Giant remains a landmark mid-80's indie epic. Wooden Foot Cops marks a progression from this, sprinkled with some mellowed moments that have influenced late-80's Balaeric clubbing hep cats. Comparisons have been made to The Smiths - though they are well wide of the mark. They share an original record label and a pioneering, clone-less spirit but precious little else. Bonus material / live tracks and several singles adorn this retrospective. This band is alive and well and still ripping it up live in 2015 - as a recent gig at The Garage, Islington, London proved to me and several hundred other interested lovers of this band. Take the plunge, make the purchase and invest some of your time and money in this transcendental band. Got to get it on!

GORGEOUS! An utterly Perfect triple CD to celebrate one of the Best Bands I ever saw live (at The Bierkeller in Bristol) who also released 2 Classic, sorry, 3 including the Live one, albums and a Wealth of Brilliant singles, that Always filled the dance floor back when I was a young Alternative D.J.

So, So, So glad to finally get all 3 songs from the Debut single on CD. Utter gems.

All the SONGS are utter gems. The band was a gem. And we should all take this CD to our hearts and add a little light and love into our groovy hearts.
Artwork also beautifully put together especially for this release. Only quibble, more pages in the Booklet for the Album and Single Artwork would have been nice.
Lovely that Rolo did do the sleeve notes though.
Magnificent and About Time!!

Back the 80's 'Indie' wasn't a dirty word. It was a pointer to exciting original bands you could only really get to hear on John Peel's night time shows. Old Peelie introduced many great 'indie' bands to the world, though unfortunately most never got beyond cult status at best, including the mighty fine Woodentops. While you can still find the excellent Giant on Amazon, it's much harder to track down some of the singles and 12" that weren't on the two studio albums. This is why this is such a welcome release. For the music I'd give this 5 stars but I knock off 1 for the exclusion of the original versions of Move Me and It Will Come. While not bad, the remixes of these two songs on CD3 aren't as good as the original singles, for my money their two best tunes. However, these can be found on the hard to get Well Well Well; The Unabridged Singles Collection

the woodentops were not around for long but they made a big impact on the indie scene
they made music that you could dance to, a big change from shoe gazing!
I saw them at the town and country club in the mid eighties
which was a great time for music because in a short time
I also saw the triffids, the church and lone justice
notably none of these bands were british

The C.D i ordered was from America, so i do not know if the packaging will be the same as the European issue. My copy included a booklet in a 7" single cover, a nice touch. The three C.Ds were all in good condition and so was the cover. I would recommend this seller as they were prompt and the item arrived early.
