This review is from: Four Classic Albums (New Bottle Old Wine / Great Jazz Standards / Out Of The Cool / Into The Hot) (Audio CD)
This compilation presents four former vinyl albums, happily in chronological order (not always the case with Avid reissues). "New Bottle Old Wine" was recorded over four sessions in 1958, with a fourteen piece orchestra. "Great Jazz Standards" dates from early 1959, and "Out of the Cool" from late 1960. Nat Hentoff's original sleeve notes for the 1961 album "Into the Hot" made it clear that although it was billed as by the Gil Evans Orchestra, the performance was turned over to John Carisi and Cecil Taylor, whose orchestras took three numbers apiece, under Gil's aegis.

These recordings are a logical progression of Gil's earlier arrangements, first for Claude Thornhill, then later for Miles Davis, albeit applied to larger groupings. He had the ability to meld the various instruments so as to produce a sonic kaleidoscope, the effect of which was heightened by the use of chromatics. The first CD is devoted to his transformation of jazz standards, and "Lester Leaps In", "Chant of the Weed" and "Davenport Blues" deserve special mention. "Out of the Cool" was his most acclaimed album, and it's hard to see how this composite reissue could be bettered as an exhibition of his art.

The sleeve tells it all. 4 classic albums. The albums just happen to be by one of the great jazz arrangers and composers of all time. Having the chance to hear these late 1950s and early 1960s discs that have been expertly transferred to CD will excite your ears and either confirm you as a life long fan or occasional listener. Whatever the outcome you cannot skip on the great price, sound and presentation of the set. buy it today.

Recordings made around the time of the Miles/Gil masterworks, with the same fascinating scoring ideas from Gil, with a range of soloists

I remember Gil Evan's name from time past and when I encountered it while searching Jazz CD's available at Amazon thought I would give it a try. Disc has so many of his arrangements played by the Stars.

Not all his material is stunning and many tracks have been lifted for compilations. It is very strange but his music has lasted well - he was always nimble and avoided cliches. If only half the several hours were listened too were replayed this compilation would be a snip. Very many of his arrangements are still used by whiskery jazz bands and that is a considerable testimony.
