5.0 out of 5 stars Nice lens
If you are reading this you are probs looking to replace your 18-55 kit lens you won't be disappointed with this lens it's faster, sharper, has silent autofocus which locks on 99% of the time with out hunting, it's 17-70 so the extra reach is bonus and so is that 1mm at the wide end, when buying this though do remember what it is it's a kit lens replacement it's not a...

My conclusion on this lens is that all the reviews are right. It is quite soft at 17mm and oddly stopping down the aperture does not make things noticeably better. The good thing is that it is still a lot better than a Pentax 18-55 kit lens so can be seen as a genuine step-up lens, but at 329 it should be! The zoom range is also good and at anything from about 30mm upwards this lens is extremely sharp, especially from f5.6. However as I shoot landscapes at wide angle I am going to have to send it back as it just isn't as sharp as it should be at 17mm - I could have lived with it if it sharpened up at, say, f5.6 but it just doesn't. Disappointing for me but could be just the lens for others. It is going back and I have ordered the EX 17-50 - less zoom range but hopefully sharper at 17mm!

Excellent upgrade for the kit lens, better and cheaper than its Pentax 17-70mm counterpart.
Sharp and fast, the hsm af works great.

On the bad side, its a bit heavy, the lens cap its tricky to fit, and it has a tendency overexposure in low light with my K20D but manageable.

Im loving it.

Buyers beware. There are compatibility issues with this lens and other pentax DSLRs. eg. IT WILL NOT AUTOFOCUS with K10 or K20. Not sure of the specs on why but lots of discussions on Flickr etc over these issues.
This was a huge disappointment for me .
