5.0 out of 5 stars Barbs of bitterness & hurt given voice by a poet
It takes some guts to pour out your heart in such a public way, but this is exactly what Mrs Ritter's young man does. The fallout from his 18 month marriage to Dawn Landes is painfully articulated in this album and you can feel the catharsis Josh receives from doing just that.

"A new lover" was first heard along with a couple of other tracks last year in the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Teenage angst
I have all Josh's albums and consider myself a big fan. Bought this album to listen to in advance of his Vicar street Concert in Dublin. Its nowhere near as good as his earlier work. Its a bit of a self indulgent album and I imagine the ex wife is none to pleased to have a picture of the break up captured and made so public like this. There's too much of what sounds...

5.0 out of 5 stars So much talent..., 30 Mar. 2013

I have loved everything this talented young man has recorded. This most recent album would be worth buying just for "Joy to you Baby" alone. Josh consistently makes wonderful music... his songs are clever, thought provoking, gentle and soothing...or just plain entertaining. I met him some years ago... what a genuinely nice guy. I wish he toured more in the UK!

Thought songs would be more intense after reading other reviews so surprised somewhat but immediately liked the tone of Josh's voice.Having listened to the album a few times it is growing on me and is definitely a keeper.

Only the second Josh Ritter album that I've purchased so I wasn't sure what I was in for. Heart felt lyrics and understated production. This is a "grower" in the best possible sense. Well worth the gamble.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE PLAYS ON WORD'S THE THING WHEREIN I'LL CATCH THE CONSCIENCE............., 9 May 2013

I'll start by cheerfully admitting that you either like Mr Ritter or loathe him. I think, most of the time, he's a very clever lyricist who writes about himself more than he would care to admit. This offering combines the phraseology of Billy Joel and Paul Simon (and Randy Newman) with the very well delivered simplistic finger picking of folky guitar riffs. All of it combines to chronicle what clearly was a difficult time for the man in what appears to be the break up of a close relationship. You have to have been there to know the feeling and JR was certainly stuck in the middle, suffering. Poor bloke.
Major downer for me is that with all the ace artists around you would have thought he could have come up with one who could draw a likeness of himself which was more like him and less like someone fatter, older and dopey looking! JR is not dopey!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Consistent, 13 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Beast In Its Tracks (Audio CD)
Consistent set of great songs but no classics such as Girl in the War or the Curse. Sound more like Paul Simon than ever,
Stand outs are Hopeful, Evil Eye and Joy to you baby but the whole album is quality.
