This novella is quite representative of the Sixth Doctor's era. The choice to conduct the narrative through Peri's eyes works very successfully (and is somewhat reminiscent of the various Companion Chronicles audio plays). A nice little story. An effective portrayal of the Doctor, a non-useless assistant (Peri), and the return of the deliciously rotten Rani. (I always wondered if Michael J. Straczynzki's `Deathwalker' in Babylon 5 was a nod to her?)
