5.0 out of 5 stars Multi-instrumental magical musical tour through the African diaspora, 1 Sep 2013
This review is from: Family Atlantica (Audio CD)
Where to start! This is a must-have album for anyone who likes African music and all it's off-shoots. Taking influences from past and present rhythms from Africa and Latin America (essentially one region, musically), Family Atlantica, an incredible collective of international musicians, show us how it's done on this album. Multi-percussionist and core member of the group Jack Yglesias explains very well their influences in the liner notes. You must read them when you get this CD. I could try to list all the styles you can hear in this record but I wouldn't know when to stop. Ethio-jazz to rarely-heard Venezuelan music, and everything in between can be heard here. Luzmira Zerpa's beautiful velvety voice carries you through almost every track, adapting itself and responding to all the various rhythms and instruments used. Jack Yglesias' and Kwame Crentsil's percussion is deep and pulsing throughout. Manicero is a track that exemplifies that perfectly - and gets you dancing straight away.

What Luzmira, Jack and Kwame have created with their legendary musician friends is something really special. Something that you know has to have been created with real love for what they were creating. Every single track has been carefully (yet so organically) created. True experts digging deep into the African diaspora consciousness.
