5.0 out of 5 stars Best fretless player out there, for me., 6 July 2013

This is Gary Willis doing what he does best, just playing the fretless bass. No complicated arrangements or overdubs, just straight trio work. GW's playing is as good as ever be it the fast 16th note parts or the lyrical playing on ballads. Another great offering from one of the greatest fretless bass players out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to basics.., 12 Aug 2013

Frankly, all these Tribal Tech reunions including X and the previous GW albums were getting all a bit cranky and musical mad scientist in parts. This album goes back to the fundamentals of good music, good melodies, and 3 good musicians interacting well throughout. The power trio aspects are there of course with tight rhythmic foundation, and then you can't really not have an album with a fretless bassist without someome melodic so that angle is covered as well.
Worth listening to and a welcome change from over-experimentation!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem - get it now!, 4 Aug 2013
This review is from: Retro (Audio CD)
Anyone who enjoys the lyrical side of Willis evident on 'Bent' & 'No Sweat' will love this - he sings from the heart on 'Tarde', 'For All We Know' and 'Norwegian Wood'.

Elsewhere, there is a 'live in the studio' feel - the trio effortlessly lock in to high tempo's or vary the rhythm - they will be something caught live!

Do not be put off by the lack of a horn or guitar - 'Retro' has an energy all its own.
