5.0 out of 5 stars timeless
another cd of timeless music from Catherine Russell just listen to the international reviews as they know what their talking about, this is not particularly like Cassandra Wilson and not really like Norah jones at all so give it a listen and make up your own mind you won't be dissapointed

3.0 out of 5 stars Jazz and non-jazz
This CD is broadly similar to other records by the very popular Nora Jones and Madeleine Peyroux, as well as the somewhat similar Cassandra Wilson and Liz Wright, in that they all make jazz more accessible by incorporating elements of rock, country, blues, folk, pop etc. Indeed although Ms Russell also incorporates these musics she probably includes the most mainstream...

This CD is broadly similar to other records by the very popular Nora Jones and Madeleine Peyroux, as well as the somewhat similar Cassandra Wilson and Liz Wright, in that they all make jazz more accessible by incorporating elements of rock, country, blues, folk, pop etc. Indeed although Ms Russell also incorporates these musics she probably includes the most mainstream jazz of any of these singers.

Ms Russell has prestigious jazz musicians for parents and has paid her dues in support roles playing other types of music but now follows Jones, Peyroux, Wilson and Wright etc for a slice of the contemporary female `jazz' singer action. However, her voice isn't as distinctive as Wilson or Jones - or even Peyroux - and I find that many of the straight-ahead jazz songs on this CD just sound run-of-the-mill, although I'm not entirely sure if that is down to their arrangements or her voice.

Despite her jazz heritage and her obvious technical skill as a jazz singer I found my favourite tracks were the non-jazz songs. She really seemed to come alive on the two Sam Cooke songs `Put me down easy' and `You were made for me' (in fact I preferred Catherine's version of the latter to Cooke's original). I also really liked the country-sounding `Blue memories', the Western-swing `Someday You'll Want Me To Want You' and the bluesy `New speedway boogie'.

If you like Madeleine Peyroux and want something similar, or wish Nora Jones was a bit more jazzy give this CD a try it could be right up you street.
