Dave Brubeck sax player Paul Desmond in late 1950s albums...
on 6 September 2012
Paul Desmond (1924-1977)is well known as the alto saxophonist with Dave Brubeck and his quartet and for composing their greatest hit, "Take Five". He was also one of the most popular musicians to come out of the West Coast's "cool jazz" scene. During his time with Dave Brubeck he also did his own projects and this set has 2 such albums. In addition to his work with Brubeck he led several of his own groups and did significant collaborations with artists such as Gerry Mulligan, Jim Hall and Chet Baker.
This 2 CD set presents albums from 1959 & 1957. "First Place Again!" has Paul Desmond; Percy Heath double bass; Jim Hall electric guitar & Connie Kay drums and was recorded in New York in September 1959. The album is a mix of standards and jazz compositions. The second album is the earlier "Blues in Time" and the line up is Paul Desmond; Gerry Mulligan baritone sax; Joe Benjamin bass& Dave Bailey drums. This album was recorded in Los Angeles in August 1957 and is a mix of compositions by Desmond; Mulligan and the standard "Body and Soul" and allows the 2 sax players to explore the full breath of the sound. Liner notes are by Not Now Music regular Peter Gamble and this is another great addition to their already huge jazz back catalogue. Great sound quality and excellent value. Total running time approx 88 minutes.
