This review is from: Voice of the Sword (Sword, Mirror, Jewel Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
Voice of the Sword is not just a wild rollercoaster ride, it's a wonderfully readable venture into new literary territory. Most literature involving both modern and traditional Japan has either been translated works of Japanese authors or inadequately-informed sensationalism by western authors. This work is neither. It combines the pace of a modern science fiction/fantasy novel with an authentic recreation of the atmosphere, society, history and mythology of Japan. The fantastical goings on are grounded in authentic Japanese mythology and the details of Japanese history and society are accurate and factual. But at its heart it is a story of friendship, loyalty, and courage written with all the energy and joy of youth. Reiko, a half-Japanese, half-American schoolgirl, is unwittingly drawn into a bizarre adventure involving mad scientists, parallel worlds, Japanese monsters out of legend, and a conspiracy at the highest levels of government and industry. If you want a fresh, crazy, frenetic mind-bender of a story, this is what you're after.
