This review is from: Itzhak Perlman plays Concertos and Sonatas (Audio CD)
So often retrospective collections disappoint. This is not one of these. The quality of the recordings is excellent as is the playing. I only recently discovered Perlman's playing so this was a great way for me to start a collection. The box set consists of 9 CDs. The music ranges from baroque through classical and romantic eras to more modern film scores and contains a mixture of live and studio recordings. Perlman shines equally with his bravura passages as well as the more lyrical. As might be expected the recordings feature collaborations with some of the best classical musicians around such as Barenboim, Previn, Zucherman and Ashkenazy.

On the minus side there is nothing fancy about the physical presentation of the set. The individual CDs are in cardboard sleeves and then packed into a small box. There is a track listing on each CD and a recording date, but there are no notes about the pieces, the composers or the players. Having said that I would quite happily pay the asking price for any one of the CDs.
