5.0 out of 5 stars A Little Anxiety Is Good For The Soul, 22 Mar 2013

We really shouldn't let this album disappear over the horizon unnoticed.
Autre Ne Veut is in fact New York-based singer/composer Arthur Ashin
and with 'Anxiety' he has delivered ten soulful electro-pop gems which
really do get under your skin after a couple of listens and linger long
in the memory nagging you to press that replay button one more time.

Mr Ashin has a terrific voice capable of expressing a wide range of
emotions. There's more than a nod and a wink in the direction of The
Small Purple One in his melodic inventions and compact funky beats.
Jump straight to 'A Lie' to see what I mean : It's a cracking song
balancing light and shade in its warm gospel-ish arrangement but it's
that voice which really stands out, really shines! Hovering above those
curious squeegy harmonies our host's perfectly articulated falsetto
ducks and dives like a swallow bouncing around in a summer breeze!
'Promises',too, is a splendid little two-minute uplifting confection which
reminded me a tad of Frankmusic (remember Vincent Frank anyone?) at his
poppy best but better. Top of the pile, however, is the simply marvelous
'Ego Free Sex Free'; it's a big production number full of the kind of
well-crafted soulful feeling which truly does make the heart beat faster.

Mr Ashin has little to be anxious about. On this evidence his future is secure.

Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply dazzling, 3 Jun 2013
Yasir Gulzar (Berkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Anxiety (Audio CD)
I have had this album on heavy repeat for a few months now and it is already a contender for my album of the year. It certainly will not be to everyone's tastes as he sings most of the album in a falsetto but when songs of heartbreak are this epic the voice suits the album perfectly. It's incredibly difficult to categorise the album - the guy's background is in R&B but it's the kind of strange experimental R&B that is as far away from the chart stuff as you'll ever get. Take a pinch of Jamie Lidell circa Multiply and add the theatricality of a strange hybrid of west end musical and Muse and you kind of start to approach what this guy is doing.

That is not to say he doesn't have an ear for a tune - every song has a sweet hook around which Arthur Ashin builds his songs. Just check out the sweet harmonies and vocalisation of the second part of World War after the initial jarring discord of the first. Or the beautiful opening of Play by Play (both songs are great bookends to the whole album). There is just so much going on in song wise you'll be listening again and again to pick up new flourishes. The lyrics are pure over the top emotional drama and the music has the pomp to back them up. Just listen to Promises (one of the stand out tracks from the album) and say I'm wrong.
