3.0 out of 5 stars Another mixed bag from the vaults of the legendary FAME studio.....
This is volume 2 of KENT Soul's seemingly open ended series exploring the depths of the vaults of the great FAME southern soul record label. This is volume 2 of KENT Soul's seemingly open ended series exploring the depths of the vaults of the great FAME southern soul record label. I reviewed volume 1 of this series and concluded it was patchy with few (if any) real stand outs but a worthwhile purchase if you like the distinctive 'sound' of the FAME studio. The same goes for volume 2 to some extent but with an important distinction: there are some pretty strong tracks/performances here, probably better than the best of volume 1. These are typically the more down-home, rootsier tracks with a real southern flavour such as the scorching "How Much More Can A Man Stand" by Prince Phillip, the impressive solo piano demo of "Fool For A Woman" by the same artist, the funky "You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure" by O.B.McClinton, the sass-fest of "I'm Gonna Start Checking Up On My Man" by Marjorie Ingram, the tightly syncopated "Don't Tear Yourself Down" by Ralph "Soul" Jackson, and there are also a few pretty good deep soul ballads to boot.

Overall I'd say half of the compilation is strong for mostly unreleased tracks and about another quarter is passable consisting of solid filler tracks that are OK to listen to but don't really stick in the memory. The remaining 6-or-so tracks though are poor as is the usual way with KENT and indeed weaker than anything on volume 1; these tracks are either too poppy (eg. "Are You Teasing Me" by Linda Carr), subpar songs (eg. "My Dreams Don't Ever Come True" by an unknown female singer in an almost bossa nova style.... hardly appropriate to a southern soul compilation!), or weak performances (eg. "Unfortunately" by Jackie). A shame really that KENT can't get their quality control right which is a perennial problem for them which results in another patchy effort with about 50% gems or near gems, about 25% OK stuff, and 25% bilge. Therefore I think a fair mark is three-and-a-half stars, the same as volume 1.

Back to the CDs.

All the tracks feature have never been released on CD before and most have not been re-released since they were first issued on 45s back in the 1960s.
The double CD set has a booklet featuring a host of unpublished pictures many actually taken in the Fame studios.
