4.0 out of 5 stars An Alternative History Romp - with Zombies, 16 July 2014

This review is from: The Devil's Harvest (Carpathia Timeline Book 2) (Kindle Edition)
This one appealed to me from the outset as I’m a fan of alternative history. What if Hitler hadn’t opened a second front? What if Kennedy had caved to Khrushchev? What if the Germans had unleashed the ultimate weapon on the fields of Europe in 1916? But what if that weapon is impossible to control? Give me a zombie over a vampire any day as I can outrun a zombie and they provide an alternative use for a cricket bat – none of that silver bullet and holy water dilemma. But the idea of the zombie as a weapon works here because the author captures the disconnect that lies between the characters’ perception and belief, allowing the disease to spread quickly and for the horror to be compounded.

Although the story moves swiftly, I was surprised how quickly I became engaged with the characters. Even so, the problem with a zombie story is how engagement with a large segment of the cast is lost to any emotional involvement – not a criticism of the writer, only the genre - but this author worked hard at that with a roll call of characters to root for and care about.

This story was more intensely plotted and less linear than the previous story and therefore, I felt, the stronger for it. Again, as with Carpathia, there was a strong sense of time and place with the language and detail fitting in with the invented period and I read this compelling story quickly, wanting to see how it all would be resolved high in the air above Europe in a powerful aerial battle between steam-powered airships.

An exciting second novel in the Carpathia series. Well written with characters that are believable and draw you into the story. A great second novel, I look forward to the next.
