To enter the musical world of Henri Dutilleux is like entering a rich dream full of glittering orchestral colours and sonorities fashioned with exquisite craftsmanship. Here is a composer whose work is very much part of the great French tradition encompassing Debussy, Ravel and Messiaen, yet who retains his own distinctive voice throughout. If you have not discovered this music yet, I envy you-a great treat awaits and this disc offers an excellent introduction to the composer. The title work Correspondences written for the Berlin Philharmonic in 2003 is a song cycle which explores the correspondences between the senses through the setting of texts from poets such as Rilke and also one from a letter written by Van Gogh. a recurring inspiration. These miniature pieces are set with such invention and mastery of the orchestra that they emerge like musical jewels glittering in the darkness. Barbara Hannigan is an outstanding soloist fully able to meet the music's technical demands whilst producing lines of great beauty. For those of you who are already admirers of the composer, you will want to know about the recording quality which is rich, detailed and clear drawing out every facet of these magical scores. Duplication may be an issue for some collectors, but this disc is still a must buy for as well as the world premiere, you also get superb recordings of the Cello Concerto where Ansii Karttunen offers a concentrated and thoughtful account which need not fear comparison with earlier versions by Rostropovich or Harrell. In the Shadows of Time inspired by the diaries of Anne Frank, Salonen demonstrates not only his understanding of the score capturing all its anger and sadness, but also its complex dynamic contrasts. In short. this is a must buy disc for all lovers of the composer and a perfect choice for those searching for contemporary music of refinement and imagination.

Mr. Dutilleux is a master, one of the greatest composers of the last century and this. You feel the impact immediately when you first hear his music but the deepness reveals itself slowly. "Correspondances" is a beautiful piece for soprano and orchestra where Barbara Hannigen is singing wonderful. "Correspondances" is his cello concerto and is very powerful. "The Shadows of time" is an impressive orchestral work. I feel lucky to own this CD.

Bought this on the basis of previous reviews but I found it unengaging and sterile. Would not recommend to others. Sorry!
