Merry is a dream demon trapped in the human world unable to get back to her own world.
She teams up with Yumeji a human boy who can enter dreams of other people and fight the dream demons trying to enter the human world and send them back to thier own worlds. But as always with anime there is a darker power at work.
An excellent series but only eleven episodes long and packed full of story arcs and plot twists.

The quality of this series is amazing, smooth and speedy fight sequances that look really complicated to animate but they dont stop as the series goes on with the almost hand drawn style at times it is a welcome break from the usual clean cut look of cgi, the colours are vibrant and use of haze and sunlight bluring really give it a dimention that most tv anime lacks.

The story is fun and dramatic at the same time with each episode feeling self contained and yet with the plot threads to keep it all conected, this makes for an easy viewing expereance with the possibilities of a casual viewer that might not watch every episode with you not feeling alienated and confussed.

Sadly though like alot of anime that has been adapted from manga, it leaves us hanging and as far as i know there isnt a second series and theres no english version of the manfa either to follow on from, dont let this put you off though as you will enjoy it, fun characters great story and amazing visuals.

Every night Yumeji Fujiwara, a boy who can predict what will happen in people's dreams, has the same nightmare where he is chased by cats through a strange city. One day Yumeji is forced into his nightmare while awake where only to be saved from the leader of the cats by a strange girl called Merry Nightmare. Yumeji learns of the existence of the Dream World and its inhabitants called Dream Demons who are being called to the Real World where they can possess people through their dreams. Merry, a Dream Demon without a host, is looking for a way back home and with the help of Yumeji they protect their friends from the predations of Dream Demons.

The set includes all thirteen episodes of the 'Dream Eater Merry' (or 'Yumekui Merry' if you prefer) anime across two discs. The animation of the series is good and there are some nice action scenes here and there throughout. I have watched both the English and Japanese versions of the series (both of which are included with the Japanese as the default) and while I feel the original Japanese is slightly better the English version (why they changed Engi's nickname from Eggplant-Lady to Sword-Girl I don't know) the English version is still quite good in its own right with most of the voice actors suiting their characters well with Monica Rial very good as Mystletainn.

The main problem with this series is where it diverges from the original manga in the second half of the series. Everything with Mystletainn, Chizuru, Iijima and the like is unique to the anime and to be quite honest isn't as good as the original manga storyline. If they had continued with the manga storyline then things could have finished with the battle against Maze Landsbourough and Chain Noir which is one of my favourite fights from any manga and is far better than the final confrontation with Mystletainn.

Overall the 'Dream Eater Merry' anime, while not as good as the manga, is entertaining to watch and is well worth a solid four stars

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good B Movie Type Amine, 29 Mar 2014
This review is from: Dream Eater Merry: Collection [DVD] (DVD)
This is not a classic but it is a very good anime of its type. It won’t take you to heights of inexpressible joy or plunge you into dark depths of self-examination (maybe I take this stuff too seriously) but it is great fun, fast-paced and sometimes surprising. The fairly standard characters are very endearing. I suppose what I am saying is that, stereotypical as it is, it is a good standard product.

The animation, which is very good and enjoyable, gives full rein to the various characters’ cuteness (well it does with the female characters anyway: I am unable to assess the few male characters). Frequent but very mild voyeurism verging towards (but not actually becoming) pantsu does not detract from the story. Pity its so short but it would be difficult to maintain the fast pace over a longer series.

All in all a good “B Movie” type anime well worth a watch. An ungrudging five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!!, 11 Jan 2013

I've always wanted this anime, so I was really happy when it arrived.
I wasn't expecting it until January 2013, but it arrived in December 2012, a good 3 weeks earlier then it was suggested. It worked brilliantly on my multi region DVD player, and was in perfect condition when it arrived.
The anime itself is amazing. You follow Merry (the girl on the front cover), as she team up with Yumeji, to try and discover who she is and get her back to her own world...
It's really awesome, I recommend it to everyone
