This machine was always intended as a 'NetTop' device and as such using it for a Windows desktop was always going to be painful unless you limit your interactions to basic web browsing and communication software.

This review is from: ASUS EB1007P-B0180 Eee Box Small Desktop PC (Intel Atom D425 1.80GHz Processor, 320GB HDD, 2GB DDR3, Wi-Fi, 4-In-1 Card Reader, USB 2.0, VGA, No Operating System) (Personal Computers)
I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 successfully on this machine with a couple of hangups (slow, not responsive, won't shut off, certain videos don't play). I am interested in pursuing more lightweight distributions of Linux and see how they work, but for now I can only suggest Ubuntu 12.04. Anything else may require far more configuration before it will do basic computing. I say this because with any Linux, it is almost guaranteed that the new user will get hung up almost immediately and there is no straightforward friendly approach to fixing it to make it work. Basic computing is not in the Linux dictionary. I would not suggest to anyone to use a particular Linux unless I was sure that it was certified to work (compatible hardware with the specific Linux distribution). For fifteen years I have been interested in Linux but it has never worked. It seems to be getting better, but I can't even watch the videos on EdX website on the course Introduction to Linux. The video won't play correctly because I am using Ubuntu 12.04 on EeeBox EB1007P.

This machine has been running Fedora (Linux distribution) quite happily for over a year now without missing a beat. The only time the machine is switched off is when I need to unplug the power to rearrange cables or if I want to power down whilst away on holiday.

The weak point on the machine appears to be the small antenna which can easily be broken off at the base with an accidental knock. Being able to bolt this unit between a large TV and the wall bracket shows this machine off at it's best - upgrade a non-smart TV to a very smart one and use it for consuming media rather than anything serious.

The Intel Atom processor is low powered but is really too slow to do anything more serious than basic word processing and spreadsheeting. Having only 2GB of ram doesn't help either. Windows updates can take an age to install (typically 30 minutes at a time) and tie the machine up completely.

Don't bother trying to watch high definition video, this machine will drop frames at 720P leading to jerky video so no use as a media machine either. Much better with one of the smaller Linux distros which have a lighter system load. Small box means limited expansion so you can't add more hard disc space and RAM

On the plus side, it's very small and quiet and has a very low power consumption so if all you need is a basic machine for word processing / spreadsheeting and a bit of light internet surfing then this may be OK. TBH, I would not install Windows but would stay with Linux and maybe one of the smaller Distros like Lubuntu or Puppy which will run quite quickly on this machine.
