a good read with plenty of sailing facts. it runs along the same lines as most of this type of book, misunderstood captain, back story re very young sailors, dangerous fight, captain has ' a relationship ' with a beautiful woman, then most come home to glory. Having said that it is still a really well written book and a good read

I enjoyed Floating Gold by the same author. This book is also really good and very believable. You can almost feel and SMELL the action, sights and experiences the Captain is going through.

An Horatio Hornblower act alike. The central theme is that of being plucked from languishing on half pay to be given a secret mission requiring a voyage into the Pacific rounding the Horn and all that that spells in terms of nautical skills.

The mission and its execution provide for a story of suspense, a novel sprinkling of contemporary scientific experimentation, life threatening activity in rough weather, combat and in the consequences of intrigue.

Set in 1803 in the time between war with France during the American War of Independence and the emergence of Napoleon's invasion of Spain, the mission requires the cooperation of the Colonial Governor of Chile.

The secrecy of the mission, protecting the identity of individuals engaged in espionage on behalf of Great Britain, who are in great danger if South American colonies loyal to Spain are told to regard the British navy as hostile, can only be concluded if a 6,000 league chase to catch up with a second British frigate, under orders to make contact with the Spanish in Chile can be achieved before any potential harm is done.

Generally well written, the style of writing is easy on the eye and the brain. The story is interestingly developed, with a dash of marital discord, adultery and the inclusion of an Oliver Twistian theme. The mixture of these themes with the historical navy narrative nudges the book into the gender neutral section of the genre.

What can I say here, arrival is pretty much instantaneous once the order was placed so despatch wasn't any issue. Not a bad read all round and pretty good for what it was purchased for
