Living in a house with thick stone walls, Devolo's powerline devices are great for getting Wifi to unreachable rooms. Having collected various bits and bobs from them over the years, we thought we would try their pass-through Wifi starter kit. I was struck by the noise coming from the larger of the two devices as soon as I plugged in - a sound like quiet but constant static - which might be fine for a busy room but not for a quiet sitting room. The other device included in the package also created a similar static noise, although not as loud as the Wifi unit.

We had purchased a standalone 500AV Wifi unit (without the power socket on the front) at the same time - it is as silent as a mouse and working perfectly. With none of our other Devolo devices making any sound, I can only suspect that it is the power socket on the front making the static noise. Needless to say, this one is going back to Amazon and will be buying another of the smaller 500 Wifi units soon.

I bought this kit to improve wireless access upstairs - I have a BT HomeHub 3 downstairs.
Installation and configuration was not very easy. The WiFi Move technology resolutely refused to do anything noticeable, so I had to manually configure everything.
I could find no way to extend my existing dLAN 200 network, so I had to remove it to make way for this setup.
I tried adding the dLAN 200s back into the new dLAN 500 network, but couldn't.
The installation works in the bedroom with the plug, but even in the next bedroom the signal from the HomeHub is stronger than the Devolo unit.
I am left wondering if Devolo deliberately weaken the wifi signal so that you have to buy more units?
The problem isn't so bad that I will return these items. It is more that the reality does not live up to the hype printed all over the box.

Don't buy this if you think the range will be good. It's no more than 10-15m in free air (no walls, windows, etc). If one room in your home has poor connectivity though, this is a good product. I wanted to extend the range of my WiFi from house to garage - hopeless; needed to buy another adaptor to do that. It's expensive, too. Good set-up guide on Disk.

Very neat units if slightly large, with clear indicator LEDs. Pass-through socket is very useful. I opened the box, plugged everything in and they worked immediately. No-brainer! I haven't tested the transfer speed yet (the network connection on my router is only 100MHz anyway) but I already knew that no manufacturer ever lives up to claimed transfer speeds because they all quote the max theoretical rate of the network chips used, plus a network packet is 50% routing and error checking data which immediately halves the actual data rate possible. Throw in a few mains-borne transients and harmonics and these units have quite a bit to cope with. I'm just happy it all works. Prices on Amazon fluctuate wildly depending on which seller they're offering that day. I got mine for £100.

Whilst advertised as a wifi extender, the ports also make it ideal for getting wired broadband far away from your router. So easy, just plug into router with supplied cable, plug into plug on wall and do the same at other end - instant broadband somewhere else in house.

Worked straight from the box - perfect.

The wired element of this adapter is fine...the problems start when using the WiFi. After raising a fault with Devolo and eventually after jumping through multiple hoops they asked me to return to Amazon and get a replacement which I did.
However this has NOT resolved the problem it continues.
The issue: WiFi just stops for a few minutes many times a day. If you are an occasional user it can possibly be tolerated. However if you were to use the connection to work is it simply a barrier. I have now abandoned the wifi feature and disabled it as it is so unreliable it is not worth it.

My advise, if you can, use alternative adapters; they are (I would fathom) reliable and almost half the price of the Devolo adapters.

Works a treat, not sure about 500MB, generaly get 200-300 which is loads compared to what I had. Just plug the two units in a hey presto. I run a smart TV wireless to the remote unit and it streams HD TV no problem. Touch wood I won't need to touch them ever.

I had some power line adaptors without wifi which I replaced by the devolo ones to get better wifi connections in parts of the house away from the router. Swapping them over was simple, and the new setup works (in the sense that I can still do everything I used to do) but i am not sure whether i've got the best configuration and i found the documentation techy and difficult to follow. Similarly I found the Cockpit software confusing and wasn't sure how to interpret what it was telling me. The manufacturers need to think through the documentation and software needed by someone with no knowledge of networks beyond plugging their PC into a router.

I bought these over 6 months ago to provide internet to the building at the end of our garden (probably 100m from our house). I was extremely dubious having returned a pair of netgear plugs which kept cutting out.

We live in the country and have fibre broadband without the infinity speed, even using these plugs I have not noticed much of a reduction in speed from that in the main house.

I had a few teething problems initially with internet cutting out, the plug at this time had a desk shoved up against it so I moved it to another plug with more space around it and ran a longer cable to my computer and that seemed to solve the problem.

Since then I would say that these have worked 98% of the time. I have had two instances where I could not get them to work for love nor money despite switching on and off and reseting. On these two occasions I have pulled the plugs out overnight and in the morning they have sprung back to life.

I run an internet retail business and the internet is my life blood but as a startup I really didn't want to have to install a separate phone line. These plugs have saved me hundreds of pounds in installation, phone line rental and broadband fees over the last few months so I am thrilled with them. Also the additional wifi feature is brilliant as I can run laptops and ipads at the same time.

Even with the initial teething problems and the odd outage these have been fantastic and I would thoroughly recommend.

After much research decided to go for this product together with an AV Duo despite the price! I live in a large 4 bedroomed detached house, at the end of a long lane and our broadband speed at best is 3mbps with BT. The BT wireless only coverd half the house and was insufficient for internet TV and Sky Anytime due to signal loss over distance. The Devolo was easy to set up for a novice, the wireless/Lan adaptor went into our bedroom for additional wireless coverage and the duo adaptor into the lounge (as our existing wireless coverage worked there), to provide a wired connection to the Sky box to keep what speed we had. The connection at the wireless/Lan adaptor in the bedroom provides exactly the same speed as that provided by BT at the router and now gives full wireless coverage upstairs. The duo in the lounge works just as well providing a wired connection to the Sky box with no loss of speed. I was concerned that as the bedroom was on a different ring main to downstairs where the router was, it wouldn't work. A quick e-mail to Devolo prior to purchase prompted a reply within 24 hours stating it would (and it has). There have been adverse comments regarding the brightness of the LED'S on the connectors, these can be turned off using the Devolo cockpit software. I have to say this is a great product, but then you get what you pay for. Amazon was great, ordered 3pm on a Friday, delivered without fault, 11am Saturday. Well done.
