A fantastic short story set in the world of the Shadowrun Roleplaying Game, Neat is a bargain at the asking price. Russ Zimmerman has managed to channel the spirit of one of the great original Shadowrun writers, Nigel Findley, into this noir-boiled P.I story with a twist. If you know the Shadowrun universe, I really can't recommend this highly enough - buy it right now! If you don't, it might still be worth a shot if you fancy a bit of magic and high-fantasy mixed in with your dystopian sci-fi detective story.

My only complaint was that the book was too short (though still a snip at the asking price) - I'd have happily gobbled up a much longer story. More please Catalyst Game Labs and more please Mr. Zimmerman!

Zimmerman's prose was an excellent introduction to the Shadowrun setting for me, and the book conjures up a dystopian America that is comparable in style both to Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series and to Harry Harrison's apocalyptic classic 'Make Room! Make Room!'. The richness of this setting and characterisation does not obscure the main plot, and the book's length and the tightness of the writing is just right to keep the action flowing. A thoroughly enjoyable romp.

Neat is a really well-written shadowrun story.
The main character is really belivable and the storys attention for details really brings the story to life.

Great shadowrun story, captures the feel of the world well. A lot grittier than some of the previous books which I like.

Nicely written shadowrun noir... Goes a bit - well, not so much overboard, but - the self pity gets a little tedious. But it's a good, enjoyable read for someone into the game, and it might have been a decent read generally with a bit more explanation.

A real page-turner of a cyberpunk, hardboiled detective story. It feels genuinely gritty and dirty, with an interesting backstory for the characters nicely implied rather than laboriously spelled out at length. Being a novella, many of the characters don't get the development you'd perhaps hope for, and the end feels a little confusing as it rushes out a twisty conclusion, but it's still a great read and an atmospheric addition to the Shadowrun lore.

Very enjoyable novella with engaging characters and a great protagonist. I've always loved the Shadowrun setting (stolen as transparently as it is from Neuromancer, however) and the lead's method of problem-solving is very entertaining to read.
