This CD gave me the opportunity to listen to Britten's music other than his operas and vocal works.
Britten decided to write a cello piece for M. Rostropovich after listening to his performance and thus Sonata for cello in C was created. It is a beautiful piece.
His Cello Symphony was also written for M. Rostropovich and it was Britten's first orchestral work on the sonata principle after a twenty years period and was his only substantial piece of absolute symphonic music. The soloist and orchestra are treated on equal terms throughout the work. It is also beautiful music.
Britten composed a trilogy of cello suites for M. Rostropovich as well. These pieces when first heard may feel like a bit difficult to digest but in time one discover the depth in them.
I recommend this CD to all chamber/cello music lovers.
