From the opening sequence to the dramatic conclusion the scenes of violence are expertly put into play in a way that only the master’s of 80’s horror can do.
This movie is classy in the way that only the 80's horror movies can be, with intriguingly executed scenes of violence from the yesteryear.
I bought this movie for the appearance of Viggo Mortensen of Lord of The Rings fame and I wasn’t disappointed with the way he took this role as a convict in the prison which since it was closed down has been damned.
A plus point for Mortensen fans is his time spent in his underwear while the inmates are questioned about the deaths of fellow inmates.
Lane Smith turns out a fine performance as the prison guard who was involved in the incident that closed the prison down the first time.
Blood, gore and men in underwear galore this film has it all in the tight package of a stylish horror.
A must for all Mortensen fans and fans of horror movies of the 80’s with an intriguing twist to the tale.

Prison is only available on region 2 dvd by optimum, while this film isn't widely known, I thought it was very underrated and should have reached cult status during it's release in the late 80's. From the height of the eighties horror boom, featuring a terrific cast and some intricate gory death scenes comes Prison. Predictably enough it is set in a prison but this particular prison has been re-opened after twenty years and is seriously run down. Not only is it run by a sadistic warden but it is also being haunted by the spirit of an executed man who was innocent. There are plenty of good, if clichéd, characters and even without the supernatural deaths this would be an especially nasty place to get locked up. The film is well directed and quite creepy at times with some spectacular death sequences. Prison was Renny Harlin's first American film, and also the movie that gave him the directing-job on A Nightmare on Elm Street part 4. I have no idea what the budget was on this flick, but it looked very slick and expensive. It's a great location and filled with some good actors to. Viggo Mortensen is an interesting hero, but doesn't have that same charisma like he has nowadays. Something to do with age I guess. Lane Smith plays the warden, and is electrifying in his role probably one of the best roles he's ever done. But in my opinion the star of the film is the prison itself, which makes the whole movie in a different league than many of the other horror movies of it's time. It's Grey and dark, and the production values are very convincing. Of course the special effects are important, and here we get some really cool stuff. It's never a bloodbath, but it's gory and graphic and has some very nice-looking murder-sequences. Optimum Releasing released this classic 80's horror on dvd without any special features however it's the only place you can find this film unless you have the region 2 Dragon Film Entertainment release from Germany which actually has special features but it's alot harder to find.

It has taken awhile, but another VHS film is finally available on DVD format!
I have purchased the VHS film form Amazon, and it is in excellent condition, but, as you know, VHS is now old hat so to speak, and getting a new VHS machine is not possible as companies no longer produce them anymore. I man aged to get a top of the range VHS second-hand, but as I am replacing my old VHS collection with DVD copies, it does not get much used, and that will help prolong the life of the VHS machine!!
Thank You again Amazon, you have done it again!!

Prison. R2 DVD, U.K release 1987.
The picture quality's excellent, widescreen 1.85:1.
Vengeful spirit runs amok in a correctional facility,
prisoners and guards are all fair game. Lovely looking
80s horror, really good set design & well above
average fx. Both the director and star hit the big
time after this, full of atmosphere & barbed wire brutality.
Think it's uncut, dvdcompare says so. Don't pick up the soap.
Run time:1hr 38min 40sec. Extras:trailer.

One of the best films to be released by Charles Bands' now defunct Empire Pictures, for the record the others were Re-Animator, Dolls, From Beyond, Robot Jox, Ghost Town, Catacombs, Enemy Territory and Trancers. Back to the movie in hand, brilliant and atmospheric this is a class horror picture, the likes of which we don't see today, no dull teens in this movie. SFX are of a high standard and well used. It is also framed correctly at 1.85:1 with anamorphic enhancement, the disc also features the original trailer which will take you back to '88 when this was released by EIV. Great stuff, buy it now.
