This review is from: How the States Got Their Shapes: Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Having reviewed the pilot or special of this History
Channel DVD in July 2011, which was a mere 88 minutes
in length, this release of Season 1, of How The States
Got Their Shapes is a more fullsome account of the
story but includes a look at most of the states in a
3 DVD boxed set.

Still quirky, still fun, but always interesting, we are
again introduced to an aspect of US history unknown to
the outsider and unknown to some Americans too.
Actor, comedian, Brian Unger ably presents this series
of programmes in his own fun and engaging style, meeting
with local state historians, some fine characters and
ordinary members of the American people along the way.

The need for communication, transportation routes, and
untold political squabbles all mark the boxed or wiggly
lines of the 50 states. Some states such as California
grabbed bigger chunks of land than were intended, simply
to have state access to the gold deposits, other states
shaped their chosen border to allow for rivers and water
access, Nevada, losing out and having to take 90% of it's
water from Lake Mead in Arizona.
Then there are the unmarked areas of land such as Area 51
which is proscribed to all but those who work there.
People claim to have seen UFO's in these areas, which are
used for flight testing new planes and secret weapons.

An ideal way to view the beauty and majesty of the USA
from your own armchair.

This three DVD set should keep you interested for hours.
Well, six and a half hours at least.
Brilliantly presented in 40 minute chunks.
No Subtitles, but with good audio.
Worth the Money.

I look forward to Series 2 which was broadcast in the USA
in the fall of 2012.
