Every cell in your body needs iodine, this kind of iodine. The iodide part of this Lugol's is made with potassium iodide, which is good, whereas some are now made with sodium iodide and do not go into the cells. (Potassium iodide added to water increases the solubility of iodine - iodide is the reduced form of iodine and contains an extra electron.)

However, be warned that only specifying a "combined" iodine content, as here, is misleading in two ways. First, it does not specify respective proportions of iodine and iodide. Second, a combined content of 7.62mg, if in the usual proportions (see below) is ONLY about 6%. So, how are they adding this up to claim 12%???

Using the industry standard for a METRIC drop (= 1/20 of 1ml), Lugol's content per drop should be:

2% - 1.0mg iodine & 1.5mg iodide, total 2.5mg
3% - 1.5mg iodine & 2.25mg iodine, total 3.75mg
5% - 2.5mg iodine & 3.75mg iodide, total 6.25mg
7% - 3.5mg iodine & 5.25mg iodine, total 8.75mg
10% - 5mg iodine & 7.5mg iodide, total 12.5mg (10% was the original Lugol's solution)
15% - 7.5mg iodine & 11.25mg iodine, total 18.75mg

It's recommended to work up slowly (from 12.5mg - the daily physiologic dose of iodine for the body - to 50mg daily)
example: 7% lugol's - to get to about 50mg, work up slowly to 6 drops daily (1/3 are then able to reduce thyroid supplements) and hold for about 3 months. Maintenance dose thereafter is about 2 drops daily. If lugol's gives you stomach problems, switch to iodoral, the tablet form of lugol's (more expensive, though).

Dealing with side effects of lugol's supplementation (it's a great detox as, for example, iodine pushes out the poison bromide, which is added to bread) - ½ tsp salt (unprocessed, unrefined) dissolved in ½ cup warm water, then followed immediately with 12-16 oz pure water. Repeat in 30-45 minutes if needed, until copious urination begins. Observe subjective response (usually within several hours).

It's also good for warts and skin tags, applied externally on a cotton swab, taped on and left there overnight and repeated for several days (if large or cancerous, then longer). (Painting it on the skin - apparently most of it evaporates so don't count it as part of your daily total.)

If you are nebulizing with iodine, do NOT use lugol's because of the potassium - use only nascent iodine.

Sircus and Brownstein each have an ebook on iodine. According to Dr Sircus, "At 6 grams daily (which is 6 million micrograms/day or 6,000 milligrams/day!), a much higher dose, iodine has been used to cure syphilis, skin lesions, and chronic lung disease." Dr Brownstein warns you should get a lab test before starting to supplement with Lugol's and also afterwards.

The latest edition of Brownstein's iodine book is available as an ebook from drbrownstein[dot]directfrompublisher[dot]com Brownstein writes: If you have side effects with iodine therapy, I suggest looking at selenium deficiency as a possible cause. If your selenium levels are low, supplementing with selenium may correct the problem. Supplementing with selenium in doses of 100-200μg/day has proven safe and effective at correcting selenium deficiencies. (some say you should start selenium before iodine, others reverse this advice) Sircus recommends Megafood selenium and I like the Megafood "E and Selenium" product as it seems to be both higher dose and less expensive (per mcg) than the selenium-only version.

The book "The Calcium Lie II" on many nutritional lies, advises: Dr. Brownstein takes 75 mg per day. The only reason not to take iodine is undiagnosed hyperthyroidism or Graves Disease (autoimmune disease), untreated, or from toxic nodules. These are rare and not easily mistaken. There is no known toxicity and if you take too much, it will simply be excreted in your urine.

Finally, the only online place I've seen genuine 15% lugol's is on healthy[dot]co[dot]uk - there they clearly state:
15% - 7.55mg iodine + 11.25mg iodide per drop.

Iodine has the ability to resist radiation and disease and is necessary for the thyroid gland to perform properly. The human thyroid gland is located in the neck, and all the blood in the body passes through the thyroid gland every 17 minutes. Because the cells making up this gland have an affinity for iodine, during this 17-minute passage, the gland's secretion of iodine kills weak germs that may have gained entry into the blood through an injury to the skin or the lining of the nose or throat, or from being eaten and absorbed by the digestive tract. Virulent germs are rendered weaker during each passage through the thyroid gland until they are finally destroyed. But only if the gland has its normal supply of iodine.Great for energy and weight lose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beneficial so far., 2 July 2014

Time will tell how effective this iodine will be; it seems to be beneficial so far. It is important to take enough selenium, as the thyroid needs selenium in order to take up the iodine. If you take iodine without enough selenium each day, it can actually slowdown the thyroid and cause weight gain. Taking 800 mcg selenium daily with 3 drops of 12% Lugols Solution, painted on the skin, has been beneficial. Everyone is different however so quantities need to be monitored depending on the condition being treated. Chlorine needs to be filtered out of drinking water as it actively displaces iodine in the body. It is not just the thyroid that needs iodine in order to function properly, but other (including reproductive) organs and part of the intestinal tract need iodine too. Iodine has helped to shrink down uterine fibroids although this can take months and would depend on each individual case. Avoiding exposure to endocrine disrupters, such as various plastics and other synthetic materials can also help the hormones to rebalance.

Thyroid problems diagnosed 13 years ago. Take medication as well as iodine to feel good. Don't, won't rely on pills completely (know that I need it though) but thank God for Lugol's (just don't get iodine up in rubber bulb).

This is essentially just an iodine solution in potassium iodide. It costs pennies to make so this is way over priced.
