5.0 out of 5 stars Good read with a nice atmosphere, 31 May 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Wilkins' Tooth (Paperback)
Whilst not the absolute best work of the author (some of whose other books are frankly outstanding) this book is definately worth buying. The setting is perhaps a trifle old-fashioned, but the atmosphere of magic and danger is well-conveyed, and the gently moral message of the story (that revenge is not always a good idea) is well-developed through the medium of the amusing and occasionally frightening adventures of Own Back Ltd., a "company" which specialises in providing revenges for the children of the area, for very reasonable prices (about 5-20 pence!).
The danger of local "witch" Biddy Iremonger is subtley built up , and the small band of friends which gather to oppose her are memorable in their various personalities.
Depending on reading age and maturity, this would be particularly enjoyed from ages seven to twelve, and should become a firm favourite among the children of any family!

I read this book when I was about ten and can still remember the dank and dark but light-hearted atmosphere of it. My son likes it too. Quirky and fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars A properly scary witch!, 6 April 2014

I think this was one of Diana Wynne Jones's first books, and it feels like the setting of my childhood - so, very slightly dated maybe. However, the children are utterly believable, there is humour, magic, tension and drama, an exploration of the nature of friendship and enemies, and the trademark Wynne Jones cat - an animal who behaves like a real cat and saves the day in its own selfish way!

The most impressive aspect of the story is Biddy, the horrible witch, who I found very plausible and absolutely gruesome. I found her scary even at my advanced age. Maybe the children's escape is marginally unsatisfactory - a bit unconvincing that Biddy would be stupid enough to fall for such an old trick, but even so, it just about works.

It was nice to see a bully become a victim of a bullying witch and later a friend of the good guys. Characters here are well-drawn, fully realised and engaging. Lots of funny bits. Sustains the child's eye viewpoint effectively. Highly recommended.
