5.0 out of 5 stars A tale of human tragedy., 16 Aug 2013

This review is from: Pitfall [DVD] [1948] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
John Forbes (played by Dick Powell in more than subdued mode), drops into a condition that, but for the grace of God, many men could and do find themselves facing: married to an attractive and caring wife (Sue played discretely by Jane Wyatt) with a devoted young child (Tommy played by Jimmy Hunt), but through chance of circumstance stumbles across another woman to whom he is overwhelmingly drawn. The woman, Mona Stevens (played sensitively by Lizabeth Scott), is no tear away seductress either. The fly in the ointment is a large one in the form of ex-cop turned private investigator named J.B. MacDonald (played with commendable menace by Raymond Burr) whose craving for Mona leads to intrigue and evil practices culminating in the final tragic scenes. The fourth important player, who only really enters the stage in person towards the end, is Mona's hapless ex-boyfriend clapped up in jail for theft.

Do not expect to see lurid scenes of passion featuring Forbes and Stevens; in fact the portrayal of their attraction for one another is sensitively handled with few scenes of close physical contact between the two.

This is a tale of human tragedy that remains suspenseful to the very end.

Picture quality improves as the film progresses.

5.0 out of 5 stars MARVELLOUS MOODY PIECE, 24 Nov 2013

This review is from: Pitfall [DVD] [1948] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
I have seen Dick Powell in several Film Noir movies, but this time round I was really taken by his gravitas in the role of a bored family man who pays the price for a moment (or two) of passion with a glamorous but trouble-ridden femme fatale. Lisabeth Scott also gives a good performance, sensitive and nice - not really a bad girl at all! Well directed and surprisingly realistic - the wife decides to give her erring husband another chance, but the viewer is left wondering how long she will be able to endure it. After seeing Dick Powell in this role, I intend to go back and take a look at him in other movies. He's much better than I have given him credit for in the past.

Raymond Burr (Ironside) steals this film as a nasty private cop who is obsessed with a femme fatale which family man Dick Powell also falls for. A morale tale of the "perfect" (so called) US family that is threatened with break up because of Powell's infidelities.

Some great photography from the Director.

Any film noir featuring Lizabeth Scott is first rate in my opinion. But what is not to like about the genre?
