2.0 out of 5 stars almost terrible
I don't know why they re-release in HD movies like that, and whiy (in Italy , Europe even USA) there's so many fans of crap like that. Bava made some great movies, but here it lacks of visuals (safe for few short moments), bad acting, bad direction, awful screenplay. Save your money

Lisa & Devil is slow and confusing but has many beautiful scenes and an interesting cast including Elke Sommer, Telly Savalas and Gabriele Tinti. It is one of Mario Bava's strangest films but has some great visual ideas and a atmosphere of doom. The alternate cut of it is called House Of Exorcism and is a mad Exorcist rip off in comparison with overacting and some hilarious profane dialogue.

This is a lovely package with both films Lisa & Devil and House Of Exorcism on blu-ray and DVD.

The films are uncut and look very good in HD despite small scratches occasionally. The colours are deep and details are fairly crisp. Its definitely a step up from the DVD.

Extras are plentiful and Arrow always provide a good packaging with colour booklet and reversible cover art.

The discs are region B/2

4.0 out of 5 stars Odd, atmospheric and Telly Savalas steals the show., 2 Sept. 2014
One of the final movies of Mario Bava's career is a real strange one. Plot has the lovely Elke Sommers and a stranded pair with chauffeur having to spend the night in a mansion. But there are secrets and killings galore as things go bump in the night. The acting is very good but it's all upstaged by the great Telly Savalas as the butler with more secrets than anyone. He plays it for laughs but each time he is in frame he brings a terror to it all.

The atmosphere is spot on and Bava has directed very well. Lisa and the Devil won't be for everyone and if you don't like lingering shots stay away. The film is slower in its second half though the ending is eerie and a knockout.

The movie was bizarely re shot by producer Alfredo Leone, which has Sommer possesed by the devil. This was retitled House of Exorcism and was made purely to cash in on The Exorcist which at that time had taken the world by storm. This is nothing short of a disgrace- and his effort even takes direct scenes from the movie, a rip off. And it feels too comedic like. Repossesed (1990) did it better. But stick with the original and the best, Lisa and the Devil is worth your viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Devil's playthings..., 14 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lisa and the Devil Dual Format [DVD & Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This reviews the original Italian film "Lisa and the Devil", which never
saw official theatrical release, after being shown at the Cannes Film Festival.
I don't think I will ever watch the pitiful travesty of "House of Exorcism",
which was disowned by director Mario Bava-watching the trailer of that film
was painful enough...
Notwithstanding the non-linear logic of "Lisa and the Devil", and its
dreamy or nightmarish qualities, it is essentially a gothic horror story:
The characters are lost souls who have been trapped in a private Hell,
created by their crimes of passion.
They are forever doomed to repeat these same crimes.
The film is shot in gorgeous Technicolor, with the famous Italian flair,
amidst the decaying splendor of late 19th Century opulence.
The music of the film-mostly based on Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo-
is superb.
I would suggest that "Lisa and the Devil" has aesthetic/stylistic similarities
to "Don't Look Now" by Nicolas Roeg,
Don't Look Now (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] [1973]
and "The Comfort of Strangers" by Paul Schrader.
The Comfort of Strangers [DVD] [1990]
There's no mention of digital restoration in the product description,
and the image tends to be uneven-on a 46" LCD screen:
Daytime scenes and well lit interiors look fabulous, but outdoor night scenes
are visibly faded and grainy.
Overall, I think that this Blu-ray/DVD package is one of the best I have ever
acquired-a true labor of love by Arrow Video.
If you appreciate Mario Bava's artistic genius, his last (uncredited)
contribution to Cinema was in Dario Argento's masterpiece "Inferno"

Arrow have come up trumps with this release of Bava's most dreamlike film.
Both versions are included in the package (Lisa and the Devil and House of Exorcism) and both have been cleaned up nicely.
The package comes with an interesting booklet on both films and includes an interview with Bava from 1976.
Arrow have done themselves proud with this release and I cannot wait to see their future Bava releases.
Highly recommended.

It's been a while since I last saw this film so I'm really glad to get it at last, especially on Blu-ray. The picture quality is very good indeed as is the sound so I have no hesitation in recommending this disc to fans of Mario Bava's movies.

Nice to see this beautiful Mario Bava film out in a lovely Blu-Ray restoration.
Equally fun to have it's re-released Exorcist style version here for comparison too.

The disc is loaded with nice extras and is a must for any Mario Bava fans.
