Security and energy saving Dusk until Dawn Sensor
on 8 August 2013
This item seems to be very well built and sturdy both mechanically and electrically. I bought it in the hope that it will last longer and be more stable than the sensors that come with outside lighting and which seem to fail within 12 months.
I installed it to switch a fluorescent entry light on at night and off at dawn for security and energy saving reasons. So far it is working perfectly.
2 things to note though: 1) The white cap does not fit tightly enough and will blow off in a wind - so I have added some thin foam draught excluder to tighten it. 2) The wiring diagram is insufficient for a DIY installation if you are not familiar with electric wiring so probably better to use an electrician. You will need a length of 2 way wiring between the sensor and the light fitting (no earth is needed in this wire).
However, if the manufacturer added a proper wiring diagram it would help considerably and aid safety. Otherwise easy to fix with 2 screws/plugs supplied.
Also, a rubber gland should be provided by the seller to seal the bottom cable-entry access point. Alternatively, buy one and fit it to stop ingress of moisture/insects. In view of the recent storms I have sealed the white dome permanently to the body with silicon sealant as a precaution to prevent it being blown off in a gale which would then expose the electrics.
