If you like rom-coms you'll love this. If you hate rom-coms then you will like this too! It's a romantic comedy with a serious underlying theme of the aging woman who can hear the clock ticking and wants to have a baby but can't find the right man to be the father - except her best gay friend who ticks all the boxes. Simple. Sort of. Sounds simple enough but they have...

I had wanted to see this for a while and finally got round to it and I must admit to being underwhelmed. The plot is that Matt (Mathew Wilkas `The New Twenty') has a long term `best gal pal' in the form of Jenn (Jenn Harris - `Confessions of a Shopaholic') and she wants to have a baby. The problem is she can't find her Prince Charming and all her relationships last a mere, few months. Mean times she decides to ask Matt if he will be the father, the catch is that she wants to do it the old fashioned way and avoid the whole turkey baster routine. To aid in her fertility she does all she can including taking `horny goat weed'.

We get to meet all their friends including his from the comic store where he works and hers from the gym where she teaches yoga. They are all nice enough and there are some good interchanges between the characters. The problem is it just is so not funny. I could raise barely a smile and it does seem to move at a very slow pace indeed. There is nothing wrong with the actors at all; it is just the material they have to work with, or rather the lack of it. There is some bedroom rutting but all pretty inoffensive and no gay `getting it on' either, so if that is what you were looking for, then best to not bother.

There also is very little background music but there is a very good version of Beyonces `Crazy in Love' which is performed by Antony and the Johnsons, which perked things up. There is genuine warmth from the players with each other and real on screen chemistry which was appreciated and it was fairly well directed, but in the end it was just `ok, hence my rating.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gay rom com with some straight sex thrown in for good measure., 21 July 2014

This review is from: Gayby [DVD] (DVD)
Perfectly tolerable and watchable gay (with straight sex thrown in) rom com that is nice enough. There's no bad performance here. There's also no explicit gay sex scenes. And no nudity either. I'm thinking the 15 certificate is for the sex references and the parts where the gay guy puts his-just-about-to-cum-cock in his best friends vagina. In lieu of any pelvic thrusting there's some pretty hot kissing here. This is another gay film in which the guys are hot. There's some fun to be had here. The acting here is very good.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Disappointing", 18 Jun 2013

This is another example that proves that American comedies are not very funny. The trailer promised more that the film actually delivered. Jenn's acting ability does not impress me. She manages to look bored and is in fact boring most of the time. She is definitely miscast. The film is supposed to be a comedy. The male actors saved it though. `Gayby' was not value for money. I paid 14 for it and that was far too much. Thanks to the male actors it was entertaining at times.

Very predictable and lacking any real interest. There are better ways to waste your life than by watching this movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sign of the times film, 3 May 2013
This review is from: Gayby [DVD] (DVD)
If you like rom-coms you'll love this. If you hate rom-coms then you will like this too! It's a romantic comedy with a serious underlying theme of the aging woman who can hear the clock ticking and wants to have a baby but can't find the right man to be the father - except her best gay friend who ticks all the boxes. Simple. Sort of. Sounds simple enough but they have never seen each other in that light before (as objects of desire) so even trying to get it together causes some very toe curling scenes. There are a lot of minor characters who fit the stereotypes one would expect for a Manhattan rom com but they are done very well - especially the one who decides he will become a 'bear' because he gave up smoking and put on a lot of weight. He's as camp as a row of tents.

Do watch the deleted scenes (there are two of them) because they explain one of the central points left untouched in the film. You have to watch it to understand. Very pleasant film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly smart and entertaining... and Tommy Heleringer, 3 Jan 2013

This review is from: Gayby [DVD] (DVD)
I've gotten so used to terrible gay movies (especially American gay movies made in the last 15 years or so) that it's almost shocking when a good one comes along. Gayby is a good one.

It's about lifelong best friends Matt (gay) and Jenn (straight), who had said in college that they'd have a baby together some day. Years later the day comes, and they get to work. Meanwhile, each of them has an active work and social life, a miserable love life, and an entertaining and diverse set of friends of various types and stereotypes.

Unlike some in the gay audience, I don't hate stereotypes, because there are some wonderful people who fit most of the stereotypes... except one - the hairless gym boy with blinding white teeth and a perfect tan on every square inch of his totally shaved body. There are NO wonderful people who fit that stereotype, which is one reason American gay movies in general have become so stupid that 99% of them are unwatchable. The only gym bodies in this movie have hair all over them, teeth the color of teeth instead of chalk, and tans (if they have tans at all) only where people naturally get tanned from being out in the sun - all of which is delightful.

This movie has a likable and able cast, a very smart and entertaining screenplay, one of the sexiest men on earth in a tiny role (Tommy Heleringer, who plays Adrian, one of Matt's abortive dates; he also plays Scruffy in a web series called The Outs, and he's so delicious I'd eat him up if he ever came to my door) and (thank God!) New York City. The worst movie ever made in New York is better than the best from LA, and Gayby is far from the worst. It may be the best; it's certainly one of the best. Very much worth seeing.

Matthew Wilkas was the surprise of this film. Playing the part of Matt, he is amusing to watch and seems to enjoy his craft.
The film itself is an amusing comedy lasting around an hour and a half and definitely was not time wasted. If comedies featuring a few gay characters interest you, Gayby will satisfy.
Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written rom com., 31 Jan 2013
This review is from: Gayby [DVD] (DVD)
Gayby is one of the funniest films I have seen about modern dating and parenting, straight, gay or in-between. The acting is superb and the ending so joyful. It only gets better upon repeated viewings. The filmmaker, Jonathan Lisecki, is a huge new talent.
