Imaginative, clever and VERY un-putdownable!
This book draws you in like a fish at the end of a rod. Although details are quite graphic - it left lots to the reader's imagination. Even though the plot has been seen and heard of before there are a few clever unexpected twists. Just when you think you have it sussed, it takes you completey by surprise when you soon find out how wrong you are!
One of his best books by far.

This was better than the previous version, The Face of Fear. Here the clarivoyant is Mary Bergen, who works with police to help them solve cases. She is accompanied by her brother and her husband, who come increasingly into conflict as to how to help her handle the emotional fallout of her work. But now she is pursuing a serial killer and her visions have a new intensity, she is experiencing the pain of the victims and something seems to be pursuing her, something to do with the trauma buried in her past when she was sexually assaulted by the family gardener. Gripping and much better in terms of focus and pacing, but for me the red herring was too obvious.

This book completely took over my rainy afternoon and turned into a study in facinating mystery! The central character of this book is Mary Bergen, a sweet, sensitive, psychic. She endured a torture at the tender age of 6 that she can't remember. Through the physical and emotional trauma at that tender age, she developed psychic ability. She uses that psychic ability to help police solve homicide cases and find the killers.
With her during these endeavors is her devoted brother Alan, always at her side, pained with concern over her. Also there is her tough, but tender husband, Max. Max is depicted as a tough character with eyes of cold steel that only show tenderness when he is with Mary. Of course Alan and Max don't get along, each hating the other.

Soon a series of brutal murders begin to take place. Mary sees the crimes committed, can feel the pain of the young women who are murdered, but never manages to develop a vision of the killer's face. Soon, she knows, this killer is going to come after her. Can she solve this series of brutal crimes before she becomes the next victim?

This story is well written but short enough to read in a single day. Koontz crafts characters that you genuinely care about, and some fearsome, evil chracters as well. None are comic book, stereotype characters, which makes them all the more believable. The story is so well told that it'll draw you in and keep you held in it's grip until the brutal end.

This is the first Dean Koontz book I picked up in the local library. I was so hooked I read it walking home and nearly collided with lots of lamp-posts. The story whilst not 100% original is hooking. The characters are timeless and it pulls you in as only Dean Koontz can. If you are looking for a new author to read or have read Dean Koontz'z more recent work and want to know where it came from try this. It really is THAT good.

I don't like leaving bad or neutral reviews, but I had to make myself finish this book. It started off well but then waned in the middle. I already worked out the identity of the killer early on. Typical stalk and slash with a psychic detective with a traumatic childhood on the serial killing case.

Have read many of Koontz books, but nowadays he has become repetitive and over priced.
This book is very poor, lacks originality and the characters are sickly sweet and detestable.
Don't waste your time or your money.

This is a review of the kindle edition. Now, I am a great fan of Dean koontz, but this book, well, really I struggled to give it three stars. The villian was so obvious from the beginning and and story itself was "written by numbers'. The whole thing was so predictable you could have written each paragraph yourself...If you want to read Dean Koontz, read his great books, Watchers, Odd Thomas, Velocity, Intesity and hosts more. NOT this one....

The plot was a bit paper thin and who the 'villain' was couldn't have been more barn door obvious. The female lead character was so two dimensional and her 'self delusion' was so hard to believe - overall the most disappointing of Koontz work for a while. I'd suggest giving it a miss.

Oh dear Dean , one of my must read favorite writers , has not done himself justice with this lazy attempt at a book. Totally predictable from the start and actually got very board half way through ..... if you are a Dean Koontz avid fan like me ,please try and avoid this book.
