No Modern Day Classic...But
on 1 March 2013
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this low budget war movie,on paper it doesn't look that impressive. But its not what I expected, and pulls off the neat trick of being greater than the sum of its parts.Don't get me wrong it doesn't make any attempt to be a realistic war movie, there are far too many historical gaffs for that, but it settles for being a an action flick with a World War II backdrop, and on that level it works quite well. Its reasonably paced, that action is fairly graphic, and there is plenty of it,in short it does exactly what it says on the tin.Biggest surprise of all was that the standard of acting was pretty good,Ive always liked Tom Sizemore, but he did seem to have pulled the self destruct pin on his career a while ago,but his performance here sees him taking a big step back to being the actor he was,and that has to be a good thing.Even Vinnie Jones is good in this, getting to shoot and beat the living daylights out of half the German army, and loving every minute of it.
On the downside,it tends to impose modern day values onto the goings on,which doesn't sit at all well in places, and the lack of budget does make some of the effects a bit iffy every now and then,in places it looks a bit like a video game.If your looking for a serious World War II movie then this one is not for you,but if you want to be entertained by an action movie, you could do a lot worse.I enjoyed the 100 minutes I spent in its company, and its a film I will watch again at some point.Amazon don't do half marks, else I would have given it 3.5 stars instead of just 3.
