U.G.L.Y recounts the end of civilisation as we know it. Zombie-like `hosts' are taking over the world; they bite and infect their way through North America eradicating both hope and humanity as one man struggles for survival.

This may sound like your average zombie story but U.G.LY has an unconventional twist: before this world is overrun by zombies it is overrun by drugs and pharmaceutical companies. Mass dependency on prescription drugs is the norm and in this environment of power and profit one pharmaceutical company goes too far...

Rhoades' highlight's all too real and relevant problems which face today's society - an interesting and thought-provoking read!

A very real and interesting scenario. This book projects into our near future and asks; how much do we rely on prescription drugs and what happens when they stop working or falter?
An action-packed plot with an interesting reluctant hero. A dystopian novel unlike many in the genre in the way that it intelligently looks at the nature of human relationships. What in disaster is worth saving and what elements of the modern world would we keep if they were threatened?

There are many negative connotations and stereotypes associated with zombie books or movies but H. A. Rhoades' novel doesn't fall into this trap. U.G.L.Y is an intelligent novel that presents a picture of a troubled world that stems from the overuse of drugs, greed and stupidity; many of the problems that afflict society at present. Many dystopian novels describe a world of the future that seems only a distant possibility with unlikely situations leading up to a catastrophe. However, this book describes a future that is already being shaped and serves well as a warning to our generation. I enjoyed the way in which the hero is presented as being in conflict with himself and his role as it matches the apocalyptic tone of the novel. I think that this book would work well as a film but also as a source of study in the classroom.

This concept of this book posits a frightening yet quite realistic view towards our future. The society in U.G.L.Y. is one in which stress and problems tend to be solved with drugs. This has lead to heavy drug misuse as a jerk-reaction to almost every situation. This dependence has also given too much power to the pharmaceutical companies. But what happens when a drug doesn't work, causes heavy side effects and finally creates a deathly pandemic?
This story grips you from the beginning. The hero is a very interesting, multi-layered character whose despair to fight the infection is well developed. His journey reminded me a bit of `I am Legend'. H.A. Rhoades has developed the zombie scenario to a brand new level.

A free download. I enjoyed reading it, but it if you are not keen on Sci-Fi then this probably won't be for you.
