5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and exciting to read, leadership experience and insights
Whilst the SAS would not normally grab my interest I head heard it was a good book for entrepreneurs and so decided to try it.

I finished the book in a day, which is extraordinary as I rarely finish books in a day and I almost never finish business books cover to cover (skipping chapters / getting board etc).

It felt like I was in the room with Floyd...

Not bad for a quick scan but has the impression of having been written in a hurry and feels rather cobbled together. Unclear what the value of co-authoring this was as Simon adds nothing to the tale other than to provide someone for Floyd to have a conversation with. Odd.

This book provides a window on an exceptional individual for whom failure in any field is simply never an option. This fascinating book reads as though the author is sitting next to you and you are exploring his world with him. A uniquely interesting, insightful and thought provoking book that should be on every leader's bookshelf.

If you are in the need of management / teamwork advice but do not intend to devote lots of time and effort to reading about it 'Elite!' may just be the right book for you. With a combination of a SAS story (designed to illustrate the points made) and some relatively standard but by all means correct and sensible knowledge base on the topic, the author managed to summarize some very solid approaches and bring them across in a way which will mae it understandable to the widest possible readership.

As a brief summary of the principles, the author could not delve into depth of specific approaches / tools, so if this is what you are looking for, a more dedicated book will be preferable. Equally, the purpose of the book is not to explore the state of the art approaches in management but rather to provide the reader with a proven toolbox that can be easily applied and which will - if implemented with a modicum of skill - most probably lead to improved team performance.

Topics such as MBTI, leadership, group composition, etc. are all covered and usually demonstrated with both the SAS story example (which goes across the whole book) and individual additional examples supporting the points made.

Even though the author earns a living from providing consulting services based on the approaches presented, the book does not come across like an advertorial first and foremost - in this sense the book is comparable to works by David H. Maister (i.e. Managing the Professional Service Firm), namely a comprehensive enough book that follow on services are not pre-sold per se (i.e. the content too hazy to allow implementing without the help of consulting services).

The book will probably not teach a seasoned manager that much new about teamwork and leadership (here something like Schein's Organizational Culture and Leadership (The Jossey-Bass Business & Management Series) is a much better bet) but is an excellent guide for people either entering the workplace or alternatively getting their first leadership role.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional, 24 Jan 2013
Having known Floyd for 8 years I can say he is a truly exceptional person! What separates Floyd and this book from the numerous leadership books available, is Floyd himself.

He has lived and role modelled Elite Leadership, in some of the most challenging and stressful situations. His practical approach leaves you with tangible actions which work! He doesn't produce countless management models, he presents simple concepts which if practiced and demonstrated consistently produce results!

I urge you to buy this book and use it as your guide to becoming an even more effective leader!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most readable leadership text I can remember., 12 Jan 2013
It had an excellent balance of traditional theory with an overlay of new perspective combined with the authors own ideas and techniques. The presentation of the theory with examples of very practical application in multiple sectors and environments really drives home the commonality of leadership and especially the principles of elite performance. This book contains powerful messages and lessons irrespective of your role within any line of business, service or team.
