3.0 out of 5 stars Kings ans Castles
Kings and Castles

Interesting for those who know litttle of the development of castles.
Even for a reader with a knowledge of history this is quite useful when planning visits. Parts are reather repetitive as it appears to be a collection of publications.

4.0 out of 5 stars Of interest to students and general reader alike, 29 Oct. 2012
This review is from: Kings and Castles (Kindle Edition)
Although a collection of essays Kings and Castles is focused, in regards to both the period it covers and the voice of its author. Marc Morris presented an excellent TV series on Castles many years ago and should you have liked that you'll probably like these essays. Castles were a source of projecting military and political power. Each has it's own story. And each essay possesses its own colour and argument.
A small criticism would be that I would have liked more original material. Downside of kindle is that there can be no index too.
But overall this is an excellent short book and resource for students and general reader of British History alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greater than the Sum of its Parts., 29 Oct. 2012

Kings and Castles is greater than the sum of its parts in many ways. The reader can skip to any essay or period they want to hone in on, but the book can also be read as a whole - with incidents and themes overlapping. As well as a book for general readers there is enough detail and scholarship for students and readers of Medieval History.
Particularly enjoyed material on Edward I and William the Conqueror.

Get a real feel for history. Marc Morris brings the dry ruins to life. Immediately accessible and entertaining while bringing clarity to a subject I found hard at school but am now fascinated by.

As a collection of essays, Kings and Castles is necessarily bitsy. Essays are not all thematically linked, except through the overarching theme of Kings and Castles. Here and there chapters will overlap, with quotes and comments repeated or paraphrased in slightly different contexts. This is all in the nature of a collection, however, and not to be seen as criticism.

The book is best viewed as introduction to the works of Marc Morris and in this role it serves admirably. The essays span the entirety of Morris' career, from explorations of what constitutes a castle to character analyses of characters such as Edward I. They demonstrate the deft touch, the perceptive argument and - what makes Morris, if not unique certainly unusual in factual history - the humour in his writing. Anyone with an unfulfilled interest in the Middle Ages should start here. They will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Castles - the ultimate medieval status symbol, 10 Dec. 2012

Yhis book shed a new light on castles for me. as more than just picturesque ruins on a hill. They were the best statements a nobleman could make about his power and wealth. A little more analysis of the way the castles were lived in - e.g. where they slept - would be welcome.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but repetitive, 29 Nov. 2012

An enjoyable read which cannot be described as a book. It seems to be a series of scripts or short essays with a fair amount of overlap. One shouldn't be too churlish as Amazon were giving it away.

4.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing look at history and architecture., 15 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Kings and Castles (Kindle Edition)
I generally enjoy reading about old buildings and their architecture as I like to think about all the people who have lived there; the ghosts of the past. Marc Morris' book was an insightful look at not only the historical significance of castles but also their representation. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on Symbolism as it explored many details from the look of the castle to the practicalities of the building and that ultimately it all came down to what history has always been about; power. Looking into all the details of what makes up a castle is fascinating but the truth seems to be that a king is only as successful and powerful as his castle. It's what's on the outside that counts!
