I have a print copy of this novel which has been on my keeper shelf for a long time. I re-read this story every few years and it has never lost its appeal for me. Elizabeth Gill always writes strong (in the sense of vivid, there-on-the-page, believable and appealing) male characters, and tormented, conflicted Gillan is one of her best.

The story is full of fantastic descriptions of the North Country, where Elizabeth Gill herself has always lived, and which she clearly loves with all her heart. She takes the reader there. Do read this novel, and imagine you are Gillan, making angels in the snow.

Gillan and Edward are two brothers, living with a seemingly harsh father. Gil comes off worse and eventually, is banished by his dad. Sorrow follows him throughout the book and family sadnesses multiply. He can never grow out of the feeling that he is unloved. I found the story very sensitive. There is, thank goodness, a happy ending.

This story is beautiful it kept me enthralled throughout and I couldn't put it down until I'd finished it. I love the main characters Gill appears to be the old fashioned Mr Grey I would love this to be a film to see the characters brought to life. This is the last of Elizabeth Gills books that I have finished reading and its left me wanting more. This is a real love story with twists of family saga throughout a must read for all those who love a bit of historical romance.

A beautiful story of love family relationships mistakes and heartache. I got sucked into this story from the start transported to another time. The characters are very real very flawed and believable. It's written and described so well I was taken to a different time and place. Much of the story is so sad and a lot of tragedy but such a lovely real romance.

I enjoyed the story, knew the ending would be happy, but got rather frustrated near the end as the inevitable was rather drawn out. The happy ending could gave happened before the last page for a bit of a twist on the happy ever after end that nearly all books have. I like the way the author writes, it flows well. I will read more of her books

I've just started reading Elizabeth Gill books and really enjoyed them which prompted me to read this book, I didn't get into this book straight away but once I was into it I couldn't put it down and was sorry when I had finished it, I will definitely look at her other books.

A sad story in a lot of ways and sometimes I had to read the same paragraph or page twice. This being I feel because the writer seemed to be getting in front of herself a little through the intensity of the moment perhaps. However a good read .
