I've been playing this CD a lot since I got it. That these are mainly 1930s Greek songs is kind of incredible. The sound is right up to date and accessible. A bit psychedelic, a bit grungey. The arrangements are not overloaded - it's a guitar band format (with just a touch of overdrive on guitar) with bouzouki and nicely scratchy violin on some tracks, and where drumming gets space for odd time signatures to feature. I love the clean confident vocals contrasting with the rock set up and there's a bit of clever vocal overdubbing. Clearly the music is rooted in tradition but Mavrika have come up with something that feels really fresh and honest.
